'Alien' game coming from Total War dev

A video game based upon seminal sci-fi film Alien--yes, Alien, not Aliens--is being made by Total War developer The Creative Assembly.

A video game based upon seminal sci-fi film Alien is in the works at Total War series developer The Creative Assembly, Rock, Paper, Shotgun reports. Yes, that's Alien, Ridley Scott's delightfully unhurried sci-fi thriller, and not Aliens, James Cameron's macho action movie which has inadvertently and devastatingly influenced 25 years of video games.

Largely shrouded in mystery at this point, the Alien title is being developed primarily by the team behind Viking: Battle For Asgard, and is described vaguely as an "action" game.

The Creative Assembly is expanding to take on the project, doubling in size to around 200 people and opening a new office. It's now hiring, if you fancy working in West Sussex, Ye Merrye Olde Englande. Studio director Tim Heaton told GamesIndustry.biz that TCA has approached people who lost their jobs at local developer Black/Rock, which was recently hit by layoffs.

Some manner of console release is confirmed, but there's no word yet on platforms beyond that, nor a release date, details of the game, or anything else you might want to know. With E3 looming on the horizon, though, we might be hearing more about it soon.

I guess that means the Gearbox Aliens project might be dead.

"Had the chance to talk w/ a Gearbox ex a few months back, and they were pretty sure that game would never happen."

How long ago did this person work at Gearbox?

Nope, it's not. Randy Pitchford mentioned it at a Q&A in London last night. It's still somewhere, in some state.

Total War Alien. Play as the Alien and take over the world.

Imagine the Total War scheme, on a extra-solar scale.

You control either the Humans or the Xenomorphs, and you wage total war on whole entire planets.

Alien seems like a weird choice. Unless it's somehow related to Prometheus, I don't see how you could adapt the original movie into much other than maybe an adventure game, or maybe survival horror.

There are so many Alien games that Sega announces or hints at or has leaked. And then they never come.

I'm thinking of the Aliens game by Gearbox, the Aliens game by Obsidion, and now this one. Sega keeps throwing people at making an Aliens game, but then invariably cancels (re: "postpones") it. I'll count on this game showing up when it's available on Steam, on sale during a mid-week or weekend deal, and listed for $7.50.

Aliens was fantastic. It just wasn't a horror movie.
