PSN restoration still 'uncertain,' yet full service expected by May 31

Sony said today it's still "uncertain" when the PlayStation Network will be back up, though full service is expected by the end of May.

[Update 1:00PM PST 5/9/2011]: Apparently, the wording in Sunday's Bloomberg news report (the basis of our original story) wasn't entirely accurate. According to Sony spokesman Patrick Seybold, Sony hasn't confirmed a relaunch date for the PlayStation Network, and the May 31 "deadline" in the Bloomberg article is incorrect (via VentureBeat). Gaming site GiantBomb is also reporting that they've since confirmed with Sony that no PSN relaunch deadline has been established.

[Original]: Sony said today that it's still "uncertain" when the PlayStation Network will be back up and running, following a hack that saw members' personal data stolen. Somewhat surprisingly, though, the company still expects to have the service fully back up and running by the end of May.

Speaking with Bloomberg today, Sony spokesperson Shigenori Yoshida said the company was still "uncertain" when the PlayStation Network and Qriocity would be back up. However, Yoshida said that Sony was confident that by May 31, the new security measures would be in place and both services would be fully restored. One would hope that certain elements will be resorted before then, though.

Sony's past estimates for restoration have been a touch too optimistic. On April 26, the company said it expected to have some services restored within a week. Come May 1, it said again that some parts of PSN would be back up within a week, starting with important things like online multiplayer. The restoration update was going through internal testing on May 6. Today, May 9, nothing has returned yet.

There's still no firm word on when Sony's MMO division, Sony Online Entertainment, will be resume service. SOE was also hacked and subsequently brought offline for analysis and repairs, leaving players unable to play games including DC Universe Online.

Well, I think at the beginning they said they are totally rebuilding the network, so that takes time. Of course, it really shouldn't have happened begin with. Can't believe it's gonna be a month (more?) of downtime. As someone above said, their E3 show should be quite interesting indeed.

I think they need to really step up with their "welcome back" campaign. If this goes another couple weeks, giving plus members a free month of service won't even be paying them back for what they've already lost. I think they should offer some free platinum games, give people a voucher or 2 that they can used to get a free platinum DLC game for free.
As someone who came from Xbox over to Sony, I know which one gets the nod in my mind. Unfortunately I'm locked into Sony right now as that is what my gaming group has. Argh!

Yeah, they're definitely catching some of the worst interference of this PSN Outage. Not to mention other big name retail releases with online functionality like Mortal Kombat 9, Portal 2, and Socom 4 (especially Socom 4, with its focus towards online multiplayer).

To put this in perspecitve, Outland had a one day exclusivity deal with PSN and was set to be released almost a week after PSN went down, IIRC. A more niche example would be Arcana Heart 3, which was released for the PS3 -- but only on PSN, not a retail release -- on April 19th, around the same time PSN went down.

Consider what kind of impact an entire network outage for (what is looking to be) over a month has on digital distribution-only releases, past and upcoming. Taking sales factors into account, this situation is pretty fucked, to say the least.

Has that been well supported?), the online is half-assed from the getgo and now is shown to be exactly that even on the backend, the 3rd party games aren't up to par with the competition, and on and on..

Whatever interest I even had in the PSN has now severely waned to the point I could care less if it comes back up at all. I even won a free copy of their baseball game and Infamous 2 but I'm not even excited about those anymore. What a clusterfuck.

I think that's asking a bit much. PSN is really their first major network. Microsoft has rebuilt their Live network a number of times as well before we got to the current XBox Live network. They just were fortunate enough to have not suffered a major attack during their first couple of network revisions...granted their first few revisions might have been better than PSN ever was.

Rebuilt it? Not that I've heard. They've expanded it, but they've never had to take the whole thing down for weeks. The blame is squarely in Sony's lap for using old, unpatched software.

The Live network was down for a month before they introduced Passport. I also recall it being down for a very long time during the first few Hotmail revisions as well.

You have to remember XBox Live is just an extension of their Live network that has been reworked and rebranded a number of times before the Xbox came along.

I stated the Live network AKA MSN AKA MSN2.0 AKA The Microsoft Network has been down in the past for total restructuring. Renaming the network to Live does not mean that XBox Live has never been down before. What if Sony renames their network to the Sony Network after it brings it back up. Can we make the statement that the Sony Network has never been down?

If you want to go down that road, how much of the restructuring that MS has did in the past was due to s devastating attack and how often were all the service down for over a month?

The structure of Live was in the works long before the Xbox was launched and even though there is communication between the Live website and the Live network trying to imply that somehow Live PC products and the Xbox products are all run by the same people from the same network shows how clueless you really are.

There is no way they could properly rebuild an entire online service in a month. Whatever they release will only be partially finished enough to get people playing multiplayer again, but I'd imagine it would take at least the rest of the year to properly rebuild the network.

Not really. They would do that too if they need to restructure their topography in order to redo which parts of the networks are directly exposed to external networks. This could simply be a design oversight rather than security negligence.

It's not possible to do it yourself. Not like the people using the cards will be writing 'LOL Sony' on all of their receipts. But the credit card companies could be told the numbers they had stored on PSN and build up some shorter term fraud statistics. If the numbers deviate, seems like there would be a good chance it's Sony's fault.

Can't they just get multiplayer going? I mean seriously. I don't see what's so hard about that. They could loan some servers from Gamespy or something to do it.

There are companies that exist soley to rent server space. Gamespy rents out multiplayer servers. They take care of all the security and such. Sony could easily do this and let us play multiplayer at least. It's not that difficult.

I'm fairly certain that the problem is not that sony cannot acquire servers.

I know what the problem is. The problem is we have no PSN and haven't for a month, and won't probably for a another couple of weeks. This would be an easy solution for now.

but it's not a solution at all. You can't just hire a gamespy server and run PSN on it.

It's a temporary solution. Rent multiplayer servers while they rebuild their network. Once they're done with PSN they switch back. We get to play online, and Sony looks better. It's pretty simply, really.

dude, they just need to rent multiplayer servers. You know, those pre-configured multiplayer servers that are ready-to-go for any online gaming network. It's like adding a stick of RAM to a PC!

Did I say it was as simple as adding RAM? Obviously there's more to it than that. Seriously people. It's not as difficult as you're all making it out to be.

It's a PITA to get a home or small-business network running smoothly. I can barely imagine how intensive it must be to write and design a whole online infrastructure from scratch. Why even waste the time trying to get it to work with some third party service like gamespy when those resources can go towards getting your own services up and running.

I have very limited network experience, and if this isn't possible then I'm wrong. That's why I asked, "can't they just..." in my first comment instead of saying "they should just..." With all that being said, from what I understand the breach in security happened through the PS store (I looked for the link where I read this but can't find it.) Also multiplayer is run on seperate servers than the PS store and what not. I was suggesting renting server space at a company and mirroring Sony's multiplayer servers. Sure they may be completely rewriting that code as we speak but the current net-code would still work.

If I'm wrong about all this then I'll gladly concede to all of you. But I don't see how what I'm proposing is so difficult or can't be done.

the problem is that PS3 games just do not know how to talk to a Gamespy server, so you can't just replace anything since they're two completely different systems with different communication protocols.

The most important thing to remember here is that games use PSN as a first port of call. If PSN isn't active then games have no way of knowing where to go to do their matchmaking. So obviously the minimum requirement to getting any multiplayer working is to get at least a matchmaking only PSN back online. Once that is up, the next question is what do they use for matchmaking. You mention yourself that the matchmaking was not the source of the problem, so instead of jury rigging a system where they can use Gamespy servers, they might as well just switch their own matchmaking servers back on and use those.

You obviously have no idea what I'm talking about. Nintendo runs their mulitplayer on Gamespy servers. That's ALL they use them for. Sony could do the same thing. EVERY OTHER PART OF PSN WOULD NOT BE AVAILABLE, JUST MULTIPLAYER. It's extremely simple.

Sony has stated publicly that multiplayer would be the first thing to come back up. The whole of PSN isn't neccessary to run multiplayer servers.

nobody is claiming that the whole of PSN is required for multiplayer. What we're saying is that a gamespy server is not capable of running Playstation 3 multiplayer games and/or matchmaking. It's just not set up for it.

At the very least it would require Sony to get the basics of PSN back online since the games don't communicate directly with the matchmaking servers, they communicate with PSN. This stripped down PSN would need to take all requests and pass them on to the gamespy servers, then get the responses and pass them back to the game. That would be a shit load of work in itself. They might as well just build it from scratch themselves, which is what it looks like they're doing.

What I had in mind was mirroring just the multiplayer servers to the Gamespy servers. Sony could limit all communication to just matchmaking. I explained it a little more in a reply up a few comments. Like I said there I could be completely wrong.

There does not appear to be any hard deadline established, only to return services as Sony determines the appropriate security measures are in place. (from Giantbomb)

This is going to mess up a lot of releases. Devs can test properly if the network is down, so that mean no playtesting and no online testing. Obviously no private/public beta testing.

      That will delay some titles.
