Duke Nukem Forever delayed until June
Gearbox Software has announced that Duke Nukem's return to glory has been put in a hole and won't emerge until June...
It would appear that Duke is going to take a few extra strides during his long walk to retail. Gearbox Software announced that Duke Nukem Forever has once again been hit with delays and will now arrive on June 10 internationally and June 14 in North America.
Gearbox had previously promised Duke's return would occur on May 3.
A reason for the delay was not given; however, Gearbox took a moment to release a video poking fun at itself for adding to the Duke delay drama.
Duke Nukem Forever first began its development odyssey in April 1997, when the now dismantled developer 3D Realms announced the title's existence. A winding--nearly fourteen year long--road filled with leaks, lawsuits, and ladies later and Duke Nukem Forever has still eluded release.
Since we've played the game a number of times recently and have heard the fine folks at Gearbox pound their chest about its epic arrival on a number of occasions, we're going to assume this most recent delay is purely a business decision and not part of some elaborate gag to break the hearts of the waiting Shacknews community.

People here have played a portion of a full game. People at game conventions have played a portion of a full game. Portions of Duke Nukem Forever have been available to play potentially for over a decade as assets have existed for that game now on multiple engines. The only thing that's changed is there's now a developer behind it who has recently released other titles, thus giving credibility to the idea that the game is nearing release.
My comment was not meant as an antagonizing one, but more one of expressing further exasperation over as we're all aware the ultimate in delayed titles.

It's all part of the plan.
Steve Gibson was one of the front line agents in the great FPS wars of '96 and his front was his website. Originally a liason of the Quake side, he eventually switched sides and was one of Duke Nukem's main generals, thus the name change of the site.
Once that battle was over he was honorably discharged and went on to the private sector where he turned that website, which was once his disguise, into a multimedia empire worth an undisclosed sum of money. The war was over - for now - and Duke Nukem no longer needed him.
But then things didn't go well. Duke hit increasingly hard times until his allies started leaving him and eventually hit rock bottom. He called on Steve, the one man he could count on back in the day.
Steve was comfortable in his retired life, but when Duke Nukem calls, you have to answer. Shacknews woke one morning afternoon to discover Steve was gone, the site was now in someone else's hands, and he was back on the frontlines. This time, it was time to end this thing once and for all.
Shacknews was made for this. Gibson, Bergman, Tobey, this is their quest. Their purpose. Their finest hour. They will suffer setbacks but they must not fail.
The fate of the gaming world is in their hands. -

360 version has massive FPS issues and control issues. At least the PAX build did. I died twice due to framerate drops zoomed in with the shotgun. Let alone trying to have accurate shooting while iron sighting and the crosshair moves 5ft with a minor touch of the analog stick.
Oh yeah, load times are pretty lol :(
I hope the PC version is better but this delay is much needed for at least the 360 version.

It's a month... it's not a big deal. Last time it was delayed like 6 months or a years at a time to switch engines. A month is a 'normal' delay. But that is a really tough announcement to make for them though based on the history of the game. I think they handled it as well as they could considering.

This is great news. This is the first game I plan on buying day one in a long time.
Last full price retail game I bought was Aliens Vs Predator (3) and it was damn disappointing. The game lacked a complete polish, the devs just wanted it out there so they could make money and get working on a DLC. I am yet to finish the game but almost feel obligated to.
This is the last chance video game industry. If this is a $60 crapper not worth even finishing then it will be the last game I buy until Half Life 3. (then the next oblivion)
And a release internationally before the US? Why don't they just email me a torrent link to make it more of a incentive to download it. I am now debating with myself on whether to buy it or not. (especially when I can download it quicker than waiting for some shitty game store to open, save on the gas and bullshit involved) -

No, best.
Real post though, true story. I guess I can see how you would get some trollness from it, but the post is nothing but true.
Games have come out with such shit quality and the concept of DLC offends me to the core. Im still waiting for a killer game to come out which would constitute buying a console.
Red Dead Redemption is almost doing it, but video games of today are in a sorry state.

faylor from the dnf
It's not a joke. This is not something we would joke about.
We have a commitment to our fans to get the game out as early as possible and every day counts. New games are available on Tuesday in North America so we’re getting the game out as early as possible in this territory. The international markets do not adhere to this release timing, and it just happens that they will be able to release the game a few days before North America. We don't want to hold it back, we want to get it into the hands of consumers as soon as possible. -

Apparently the genre is rather crowded already: http://www.slate.com/id/2191252/

Ofcourse i would buy it. Heck, it's good for company, since it's been plagued by false information and disbelief of what the only left like 500 diehard fans who know most turths but the general public has had NO idea about DNF, they have very funny theories and popular media thinks that 2K always owned the IP rights lol.

I think someone posted this already but it has to be an APRIL FOOLS Joke. They obviously cant pull off anything on the first without a setup, Hence this announcement.
The release date in the United States (The majority of the people craving the game live here) is 4 days after the rest of the world? I dont buy it for one second. They will lose thousands of sales if not tens of thousands.-

it's not an April fools joke, honestly and truly - cross my heart and hope to die. we wouldn't do that. as for the release dates - we want to get the game out to fans as early as possible. new games are available on tuesday in north america, so we're getting the game out as early as possible there. international markets don't have the same release timing so it works out that they will be able to release the game a few days before north america. we don't want to hold it back for anyone and want to get it to people as soon as possible.

Pitchford
Thanks for coming to the forums and beating us up a bit over this. We asked you guys to come here and do that and we really deserve it. I am ultimately responsible for Duke now, so I deserve it. Given that we've made this mistake and it's cost everyone another several weeks of waiting, I think it's helpful for myself and for all of us to feel a little pain from that.
I want you to know, though, that when we announced May, we believed it. Thousands and thousands of tasks and bugs have been completed since then. Each of those work items created a degree of uncertainty with our prediction. But we use our experience and the trends and data we have to guide our predictions and that gave us confidence that May was not only accurate, but had some cushion in it.
I don't think I'm going to surprise anyone with this information, but it turns out that from a project point of view, Duke is a different beast all together. Some of our experience, it turns out, didn't turn out to help us as much as we are used to in providing accuracy with our predictions. Many of the elements of uncertainty that were rolled up in all of the unfinished work turned out to be more challenging or difficult than we were able to see at that time and too many of those points of uncertainty ended up biting us.
So we had to make a very difficult, painful and expensive decision to shift the date by several weeks.
When we announced May, we believed it and we felt that our fans, who have been waiting so long for this game, deserved to know what we believed. After all - by the time we announced the launch date (in January), we had gone many months since we first announced the return of Duke at PAX Prime in August of 2010. During that time, the sentiment among the most loyal
As we got along a little more, say, the month of February, it looked like we could make it.
And, there was a lot at stake and waffling on something like the ship date for Duke Nukem Forever isn't a good idea. So we really convinced ourselves. I convinced myself.
But I was wrong.
I'm sorry I was wrong.
I'm for that I am so, so sorry.
We're doing the best we can. Our mission is to complete and deliver the game that all of us, Gearbox people included, have waited so long to get our hands on. This game - this legendary, unimaginably fascinating and historical game - is one that not too long ago should've been dead. It *was* dead, but not for the love of the fans and the commitment of the team that is working day and night to bring it to release.
But it turns out that doing "the best we can" did not give us sufficient accuracy in our predictions to avoid this situation.
So I am sorry.
Now - what about the video?
Once we knew the decision we had to make, we talked about how we would tell everyone.
There were ideas about doing some kind of bit where it was going to be made out like it was Duke's fault. Some even suggested laying blame on some of the people or issues where uncertainty on the project was the highest and results caused the most variables in date predictability.
Ultimately, I decided that:
1) We need to own this responsibility for the delay and apologize for it, and
2) That *I* needed to own up to this personally.
I am now responsible for Duke Nukem now so whatever happens with this game, good or bad, is ultimately my responsibility. So I was going to own that responsibility. That was a key component of how to reveal that we missed.
I should now explain that we have this weird kind of thing that drives most of us... I have this weird kind of thing *very* strongly - maybe too strongly.
Here's what this weird kind of thing is: Our purpose in life is to entertain people.
That's what drives me. I can't seem to be okay with myself unless whatever energy I have is used to help enable and provide entertainment and feelings of joy and amusement for others.
I care about video games because, well, interactive entertainment is simply the most interesting, exciting, compelling, valuable, meaningful, impactful and important form of entertainment in the world.
So we couldn't help ourselves. With the announcement, the video also couldn't help itself but to try to entertain you. Even though it was about me owning responsibility for the delay and about us apologizing for it and even *asking* you guys to come here and beat us up over it, there was a strong feeling that the revelation of the delay should at least attempt and hopefully succeed at providing some kind of entertainment value for you.-
I realize that some of you feel betrayed by the date change. I'm sorry. I hope I can earn your trust back and whether I do or not I will always be working towards earning it.
But I hope all of you trust that the goal in the video wasn't to make fun of *you*. Besides offering the information regarding the date change, the goal of the video was to make fun of *us*. The purpose in making fun of ourselves was meant to be for your amusement and entertainment. I'm glad to see that it succeeded with many of you.
But ultimately, we screwed up and we're owning up to that. We were wrong about the date.
I was wrong about the date.
I'm sorry.
Try not to take it out on the team too hard. Everyone is working their assess off to make you guys happy.
And try not to take it out on Duke.
You can pull your bets off of me, but ALWAYS Bet on Duke.
