GDC: Double Fine reveals Trenched for XBLA

Psychonauts and Stacking developer Double Fine has announced its latest game, a "tower defense shooter" for XBLA named Trenched.

Stacking and Costume Quest developer Double Fine revealed its latest downloadable game during GDC 2011, an Xbox Live Arcade title named Trenched.

Described as a "tower defense shooter," Trenched will enlist players in the Mobile Trench Brigade and arm them with "a combination of mobile firepower and stationary defenses" to repel "the evil Monovision menace." Mobile trenches--mechs--can be customised, with Double Fine claiming there are "thousands of possible loadouts."

The trailer mentions that players can "march side by side with allies from around the world," hinting heavily at a multiplayer component.

One imagines a formal announcement will be made soon with more details. While Costume Quest and Stacking were published by THQ, Trenched is coming from Microsoft Game Studios.

DoubleFine is making a giant robot game. Ridiculous. It is months from Christmas or my birthday.

I was ready to write this off as another Double Fine game that I'd love to have, but wouldn't get. THEN I SAW GIANT ROBOTS! I'M IN ON THIS!

I'm so happy Doublefine is churning out titles semi-regularly. Even if I don't care about tower defense I'll buy this just to support them in creating more games.

Actually, it looks less like tower defense and more like DoTA (single upgradable hero + static emplacements + enemy waves).

Kinda a mix up of both genres.

The XLBA blurb calls it tower defense/3rd person shooter.

If you hadn't told me this was Double Fine I never would have guessed. Looks very different from their usual stuff which is coated in charm or some quirky art style. Don't get me wrong, this has me interested, it just seems like a departure for them. Weird.
