E3 2018: Cyberpunk 2077 Gets World Premiere To Cap Off Microsoft's Presentation

CD Projekt Red’s vision of the future has finally been shown off to the world.

25

Microsoft came to E3 with a mission to wow gamers and the press with a huge lineup of new games and exclusives. At the end of a very impressive ninety minute presentation, the live video feed began to show errors and a red computer terminal screen took over the event. What followed was the world premiere of CD Projekt Red’s newest creation, Cyberpunk 2077.

Cyberpunk 2077 will be the studio’s follow up to the massive success of The Witcher 3, the RPG widely considered to be one of the best of all time. The game was confirmed to be in development over five years ago at the Polish development house. While the project has maintained a constant level of hype since, the excitement grew in the last few months after rumors spread that the game would be appearing during E3 2018. It appears those rumors were true.

If Microsoft wanted to make a splash to end their E3 presentation, they certainly succeeded.

yeah I think Deus Ex is basically it and it's more much of an FPS/RPG hybrid than a big branching open world RPG. Cyperpunk is a pretty underserved genre compared to most, especially considering its alignment with most gamers' general interests (future/tech/etc).

Detroit? There's little cyberpunk about that from what I saw. Near future sci fi isn't automatically cyberpunk

I wouldn’t call it Cyberpunk in the neon 80s retro style, but if you are a cool person who began their Cyberpunk dreams with the classic books first, not movies, it is totally Cyberpunk Verité.

You should play it when you finally get a PS4, 51Fizzle!

I'm not saying it's a ripoff or anything, it's just a setting I've seen a lot in all forms of media lately. Yeah it's the future, we all live in big cities where everything sucks, of course. I didn't see an original spin on it in this trailer.

People said the same thing about der_Witcha 3 and didn't play it and then missed out on the greatest game ever made.

A bunch of people on the cyberpunk subreddit and twitter and elsewhere are complaining it doesn't look cyberpunk enough because the trailer isn't literally just the same dark streets with puddles reflecting neon that has been the bog standard look for every film and video game cyberpunk setting since ever. To the point where most people think that's the only thing that the genre can do, visually. It's sort of like assuming that all fantasy has to look like Lord of the Rings when it clearly doesn't.

What they've done here is still essentially cyberpunk but they're presenting a side of it that usually isn't depicted in movies -- and, by extension, video games as well (though plenty of authors and comic book writers have written/drawn settings like this).

I'm really afraid people will dismiss it as generic without understanding what it is that the game appears to be aiming for.

          >Observer_ of course. Only need one A in Awesome!

And yeah, CP2077 is probably going to be much more of a game with lots to do, but >Observer_ is still what I dreamed for with all my heart since my tiny childhood reading Harlan Ellison, Robert Silverberg, Harry Harrison, Asimov, Dick, years before the 2nd wave of Rudy Rucker, Sterling, Gibson, Jeff Noon was even written yet. The grimy Cyberpunk of metal and wires in the mind.

And for some more games that everyone should consider Cyberpunk: MadWorld, Killer 7 (really, pretty much everything by Suda51), Rez, Anarchy Reigns, perhaps various Metal Gear games.

But all you really need is Deus Ex and >Observer_ if you have to narrow it down. I am biased.

What is the big draw about this in particular? I've seen a lot of talk before this trailer is it just the Cyperpunk setting that is made by the same folks who made The Witcher 3? I'm not at all saying it's bad I just didn't understand the hype before knowing anything about the game.

      • reply
        June 11, 2018 8:58 AM

They've been working on it since before the Witcher 3 came out and it's based on the table top game Cyberpunk 2020 and has had some really good trailers. That's pretty much it so far.

The developer's rep is the big draw. Just like Naughty Dog, you know the game is going to be good. You just don't know how good yet.
