Fallout 76 Officially Announced with Teaser Trailer
At long last, we know what's next for the Fallout series.
Bethesda has revealed the newest addition to the Fallout series, and it's Fallout 76. The news finally broke following a lengthy Twitch livestream.
The 90-second long video doesn’t show much, in fact, it only shows the interior of what we can only assume to be Vault 76. Some kind of celebration has taken place called “Reclamation Day”, which again we can only assume refers to reclaiming the wasteland from nuclear fallout.
It's been only three years since Fallout 4 was released, and since then it's seen countless versions released across Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. To put it into perspective, Fallout 4 came almost eight years after the third in the series, so we're all a little bit surprised about this announcement - especially when we're all hanging out for the next Elder Scrolls title.

If it is set in the Appalachians, and they do have vehicles, that region being neglected for 25 years after the bombs gives them interesting options. They could do a lot to make vehicles useful and fun but also place limits on them.
Your truck lets you carry a lot of stuff over roads and fields, but it can't drive through the remains of a forest, and is easily stopped by fallen trees and rocks. Upgrades might give it more ability to handle rough terrain or obstacles, but it will still be limited by its size. A dirt bike on the other hand can go almost anywhere, but you can't carry very much on it. A vertibird, should you find or build one, can go anywhere with space to land, has a stupid amount of storage, and can mount weapons, but guzzles fuel and makes a ridiculous amount of noise.

Speculation: The game is set in West Virginia (Country Roads is explicitly about West Virginia). Specifically, it starts in Vault 76, under the Greenbrier hotel (which really has a bunker under it).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Greenbrier
It's set well before the events in any of the existing games, and may be the origin of the Enclave.
While an MMO along the lines of Elder Scrolls Online is possible, I'm liking baron calamity's notion of a co-op survival/building game along the lines of Rust, Ark, etc. The Appalachian mountains are well suited to something like that in the early years of the Fallout setting, since the valleys would limit the devastation while still allowing both travel and the spread of radiation.
This is the synthesis of several ideas from this discussion, and some random knowledge of my own: http://www.shacknews.com/chatty?id=37569408#item_37569408-

Yeah I agree with you. At first I thought it was DC based on the 76 but the trailer definitely implies West Virginia. I like your Greenbrier thought as well. Seems like it might be some sort of base from which you start. I'm speculating that you are a Vault-Tec employee this time around and may give us some more backstory and insight into the grand schemes of Vault-Tec.

Apparently Vault 76 was a control vault in Virginia according to the citadel. THis means it is not one of those Vault-Tec experimental vaults but rather a master4 vault where actual Vault-Tec employees reside in safety watching over the many Vault-Tec experiments.
EDIT: The pipboy at the start had a date of "27 OCT 2102" suggesting this will take place exactly 25 years and 5 days after the bombs dropped.

I don't have any problem with a Fallout game that takes that route, though I'm not sure how much I'll actually play. Those games aren't usually my bag.
On the other hand, most of those sorts of games seem to be eternal betas with questionable balance, stability, and functionality, even by Bethesda standards. One that's built and balanced well could be more interesting. -

That's cool, just don't pubg up mah shit.

"instead of that shit from" what? I do not understand your reference here. They really should have made a sequel to I-76. You know with the "NEVER. GET OUT. OF THE CAR." ruleset which they established in gameplay and lore.
The only good thing about the thing you mentioned that I pretend not to understand? Mark Mothersbaugh / Devo soundtrack.
And again it's so fucked up. I-76 excellent, Heavy Gear (same engine) so-so. I-82 why why why!?, Heavy Gear 2 (same engine) WOW this is so much better!
