The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Makes Geralt's World Look Better Than Ever
Download the latest version of the mod for a fully textured world that’s more gorgeous now than you’ve ever seen it before.
If you’ve played The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and its expansions, you already know the game’s world is one of the most expansive and beautiful you’ll find on the PC, even to this day. The more than two years that have passed since its debut have done little to diminish that, but there comes a time when every gorgeous game can look even better.
HalkHoganPL, a modder known for his work with multiple blockbuster titles, has been working to improve the visuals in The Witcher 3 almost since the game arrived. He calls that effort The Witcher 3 HD Reworked Project, and he recently updated it so the game looks more stunning than ever before.
The latest update brings a variety of welcome enhancements, including many textures that were created from scratch. They are more responsive to lighting sources, which produces a more vivid world, and the overall impact on your frame rate should be minimal. The edges of bricks protruding from stone walls now look more detailed, tiled roofs now seem more weathered, and even plant life has dramatically improved in some instances.
To play the modded version of the game, you will need the Nexus Mod Manager, if you don’t have it already. You also must make sure the mod itself is given priority, or other mods you previously installed may interfere and produce errors or performance issues.

When a game is released they have to keep it under a certain spec in order to work on as many systems as possible. They have various ways of doing that but they usually don't have it to where the absolute maximum of what they could do with the highest end hardware because of the small number of people who could run something that high end (this is why the ultra HD texture packs tend to be free DLC).
Modders like this guy don't have any commercial deadlines or limitations so he can keep making the game look better while the guys at CD Projekt can work on their next game.
Just someone's hobby is all.

That's where texture mods can go wrong imo. I get that the iron anchors (and the braziers) wouldn't have that high metallic sheen irl, but I bet the game's texture artists were using the shader to add contrast and 'pop' to them. Take that away and now they just blend into the general background. Sure, it's more 'realistic' with the new textures but it's also more bland for lack of a better term.
