Vanguard: Saga of Heroes going free-to-play

Sony Online Entertainment is sending yet another of its MMORPGs free-to-play, planning to open Vanguard: Saga of Heroes up to all this summer. SOE's also ramping up development a little, expanding the team to make new content.

The free-to-play launch of EverQuest will come almost exactly 13 years after the pioneering MMORPG's original release. Having launched on March 16, 1999 with a $10 monthly subscription (raised to $15 over time), it'll be going F2P on March 15, 2012.

The original EverQuest is finally succumbing to the free-to-play trend, turning subscriptions optional in "early March" after 13 years. As is customary for F2P MMORPGs, there'll be tiered memberships and a microtransaction store.
