The March NPD numbers are in and the PlayStation 4 continues to reign atop the hardware charts, while Titanfall reigns supreme in the world of software sales.
The winner of February's edition of the new console wars depends on how you look at it. According to the NPD Group, PS4 sold more hardware units, while Xbox One made more money in sales (due to its higher price), giving both Sony and Microsoft a case to claim victory. Meanwhile, Square Enix crashes onto the Top 10 software sales with Thief, Lightning Returns, and Bravely Default, but can't topple Call of Duty.
Minecraft continues to reach new milestones.
January's NPD shows PS4 and Xbox One switching places in their great and terrible dance of hardware sales, but both managed to edge out 3DS this time.
Capcom has announced that in its first month, Dead Rising 3 shipped one million units to stores.
Xbox One beat PS4 in console sales in December, but as before, there are a few caveats
"So much for the death of PC Gaming," DayZ creator Dean Hall has scoffed, announcing that the zombie apocalypse survival sim's standalone version--which is still only in alpha--has now sold one million copies, less than a month after launching on Steam Early Access. Yes, sales were at 875,000 copies last week so this isn't a huge surprise, but one million is a big round number, and that is a fun jibe from Hall.
Nintendo boasted today that the 3DS had a successful 2013, with a 45% increase in software sales over 2012. Lifetime sales of the system itself passed 11.5 million last year in the United States.
After a long wait, the alpha version of DayZ finally launched via Steam Early Access on December 16. While it's still very much in alpha, evidently that hasn't been too much of a discouragement for survival fans, as Bohemia Maruk Spanel has revealed the game's sold 875,000 copies over the past three weeks. Players better be prepared for a bumpy ride, though, as Spanel says DayZ's not expected to hit beta status "sooner than the end of 2014."
The November NPDs mark the first head-to-head between PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and which sold more depends on how you look at the numbers.
