PC Gaming is king of the hill again, but can it keep it through the fall?
Corners of the Internet have been all aflutter with excitement AMD's 'Mantle' technology, exclusive to its latest graphics cards, but no one knew quite how much of a difference it would make. Battlefield 4 has become the first game to support Mantle, thanks to a patch launched yesterday, and it's looking pretty good. DICE has reported FPS boosts of up to 58% in specific circumstances.
Deadly Premonition will always be a bit wonky, but mostly in ways that are charming. So it was disappointing to discover when the game launched on PC yesterday that it's locked to a 720p resolution, like that other high-profile Japanese PC port, Dark Souls. Fortunately, just like with the die 'em up, modder 'Durante' has released a little hack opening up higher resolutions.
After a few rough years, first-person games have become a lot better at supporting different field of view settings in their PC editions, though some still use the same settings as their console counterparts. Industry figures including John Carmack, Valve's Michael Abrash, and Cliff Bleszinski have all endorsed it, and now DICE is giving it a good looking-over. The Battlefield 3 developer wants to investigate Oculus Rift support in Frostbite, its engine which also powers games from Dragon Age 3 to the new Command & Conquer.
December 21 brought a lot of good news, including the fact that the world somehow didn't end after all, but the real revelation to celebrate was that the classic Grim Fandango is now playable on modern PCs. The first stable release of ResidualVM hit on that fateful day, doing a similar sort of thing for LucasArts' later adventure games what ScummVM does for the earlier classics.
The PC edition of Sleeping Dogs is, so They say, a fine piece of work--no quick and sloppy port. This, developer United Front has said, is thanks to support and encouragement from publisher Square Enix. The PC demo was released yesterday, so you can see how it turned out for yourself.
The so-called "dumbification" of video games, Windows 8, and the sale of Impulse to GameStop are among the topics Stardock's outspoken CEO Bradwell has covered in the PC developer and publisher's latest annual Customer Report.
