The start of 2016 is looking a lot like the end of 2015, except with a lot less overall sales.

The PlayStation 4 retook the top spot from Xbox One in December, but it was a month for celebration for everyone, as the NPD Group determined it to be the best month on record for both consoles.

Even with months of anticipation, an aggressive marketing campaign, and word of mouth, there's just no stopping Call of Duty, as Black Ops 3 holds off Fallout 4 to take the top spot on the retail charts.

There's very little that Master Chief can't do and his latest feat involves taking the Xbox One and leading it to an October victory over PlayStation 4.

It was an interesting month of September, with the PS4 beating out the Xbox One for the fifth consecutive month, Wii U showing signs of life on the back of Super Mario Maker, and NBA 2K16 rising above it all to lead the software retail charts.

The console wars are starting to get one-sided again with PS4 declating victory over Xbox One on the strength of the mighty Madden. Meanwhile, Nintendo still sits in a distant third-place, but appears to be content with skyrocketing Amiibo sales.

July was not a remarkable month for retail sales, but it was enough for LEGO Jurassic World to take down the Dark Knight.

It was a good month to be the Batman, if the June NPD report is any indication.

It didn't take long for PS4 to re-establish control in the ongoing console wars, overtaking the Xbox One on the strength of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Meanwhile, Nintendo has one thing to celebrate and that's a better-than-expected performance from Splatoon.

Xbox One has overtaken PlayStation 4 sales in the month of April, according to the NPD Group. Meanwhile, Mortal Kombat X has finished off the competition, fending off a string of worthy challengers.
