Maxis says that the upcoming offline mode for SimCity needed considerable reworking to the core structure, and that the studio required more than six months to complete the project.
Nine months after launching SimCity, Maxis has finally announced it's added the feature fans have asked for since even before launch: an offline mode. Maxis says it's in the "late phases" of development, and it'll arrive in the next update, finally allowing players to build cities alone, unconnected to the Internet.
For SimCity, the future doesn't involve building out, but rather building up. A new trailer for the Cities of Tomorrow expansion shows off towering skyscrapers that take advantage of unused airspace. Also, there are aliens, for some reason.
As a planet-hacker and cybronic force-blade punk, I spend a lot of time idly daydreaming about the cities of tomorrow. Do I wish to live in a gleaming arcology or a stinky neon hole?
