The November NPDs mark the first head-to-head between PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and which sold more depends on how you look at the numbers.
The best thing about two next-generation consoles practically alongside each other is that we can easily compare them to fuel petty arguments on the Internet. Sony boasted last week that it had sold over 2.1 million PlayStation 4 systems in its first 16 days on sale, and now Microsoft has shared Xbox One sales figures: 2 million consoles sold in 18 days.
The PlayStation 4, you may be surprised to learn, is still proving pretty popular with consumers. Sony's new console sold one million systems on its North American launch day of November 15, and now it's arrived in a load more countries, including launching in Europe last Friday, sales have passed 2.1 million.
Though the first anniversary of 3DS's US launch isn't until March 27, Nintendo is already boasting about its first-year hardware sales. 4.5 million of the shiny handhelds were sold in the US alone, almost doubling the original DS's first year performance.
A new year is here, so let the video games business boasts begin! Nintendo today revealed that over 4 million 3DSs have now been sold in the US, while Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword have all sold over a million.
The NPD Group releases its July 2011 numbers, which indicate a 26% drop in retail sales.
