Activision: 'We Might Have to Stop Supporting Sony'

157
Major publisher Activision might drop support for Sony's PlayStation 3 and PSP entirely if the consoles do not become more profitable, CEO Bobby Kotick has told The Times in an interview.

"I'm getting concerned about Sony; the PlayStation 3 is losing a bit of momentum and they don't make it easy for me to support the platform," Kotick explained. "It's expensive to develop for the console, and the Wii and the Xbox are just selling better."

"Games generate a better return on invested capital on the Xbox than on the PlayStation," said Kotick. He states that Call of Duty and Guitar Hero publisher Activision paid Sony over $500 million last year in royalties and other costs, quipping that the figure "probably still worked out at 400 per cent of the profit they made."

"They have to cut the price, because if they don't, the attach rates are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony," he said. "When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console - and the PSP too."

Kotick adds that a new physical interface "could be ideal." Sony announced the motion-sensing camera PlayStation Motion Controller at E3 this year, arriving Spring 2010.

The PS3 only had the best software lineup at E3 this year. But I guess it didn't have enough Guitar Hero for Activision.

What does it matter if the console isn't moving software. Compare any multi-platform release and you'll notice that 360 sales are substantially higher.

Not a Sony fanboy at all. I'm a PC fanboy.

Reality check: PS3 had the best software lineup of E3 2009. Activision is an autopilot publisher and loves to move rhythm games. If the PS3 moving those titles determines whether or not Activision wants to be apart then Sony should say good riddance.

It doesn't matter if PS3 has a billion good games, the point the CEO is making is that they don't sell.

And "best lineup" is purely subjective so you can't include that in any sort of "fact check".

I think it's The Last Guardian.

You know, that game where everyone knows that something sad is going to happen because it's made by Team ICO.

        LOL.

Modern Warfare 2 is going to be the biggest game this year for 360, PS3 and PC for that matter. Sony would be suicidally insane if they threw out the publisher of the most popular games on HD consoles.

You Sony fanboys really are amusing.

Whether or not the PS3 had the best lineup is completely your opinion

considering that Sony has yet to have a blockbuster (in terms of sales) exclusive i don't see what that matters even if that were the majority opinion.
