god, i'm trying so hard to hate this game, but i don't know if i can anymore. the idea of these ridiculous fight scenarios has always turned me off... solid snake vs. pikachu? give me a fucking break. do i take my games too seriously? is it impossible for me to enjoy it? everyone seems so excited for it, i don't want to feel like i'm just falling victim to the hype machine.
also important to note, i've never played a smash brothers game before and if i was to start now, i would be playing by myself.-
Dude, smash bros. is the best party game ever for my friends and I. Many game nights (where we planned to play lots of everything) turned into Melee-only fests until 4am.
As a solo experience... mehhh not so great other than to practice your leet skillz. Brawl is supposed to have a more significant single player element, but we shall see soon enough.
And to answer your question "do i take my games too seriously?" Yes. -

yeah, i phrased that poorly.. it's just that i see pictures and i want to be like "what the hell is wrong with you people? how can you like this?". a little voice in my head is begging me to not like this game and i'm just about ready to tell that voice to STFU and have fun.
maybe i'm just bitter no one wants to play it with me :(-
I was like you once, wax. I saw the commercials for the First Super Smash Brothers, and I thought by myself; What the hell? Why would Nintendo throw it's good name for the dogs? Mario is a great platform game, and I enjoy the puzzles and worlds depicted in the games, I don't want him to fight other people. I mean; all the characters have been ripped out of context, destroying the stories.
I started to dislike the game more and more, with each commercial or preview, I was more disgusted.
Until I tried it...
Man, it got me hooked. You shouldn't take this game serious (as I do with my other games), it's a Party-game. It's great fun kicking the lving daylights out of Pikachu with Link, only to be swallowed by Kirby and knocked off-screen by a bob-omb. The game is fast, fun and addicting; I've played hours straight; dishing out punishment with Link :P
I recommend this game to everyone; Don't be scared by the hype and "weirdness" of the game, if you haven't played this game, try to do it as soon as possible, and play it with an open mind. If you still don't like it after you've tried it, it's a shame, but possible, and you've tried it.
So to all the gamers who haven't played Smash Brothers (especially you wax13), Try it. I'm sure you will like it :D

You sound just like my kid cousin. "I'll never play a Mario game. All you do is jump around and eat mushrooms. I'll go back to paying Halo."
There was a time when gaming wasn't just about killing things in the most realistic way possible. Back then, it was about outlandish settings, wacky characters, and most of all... pure fun. Just throw away that elitism aside and have fun for fun's sake.-
i already threw out my elitism when i picked up mario galaxy again and was reminded of what you just explained. pure gaming goodness that i haven't experienced since i picked up my first NES system when it came out back in the day.
it's not so much the "weirdness" that bothers me, but what smoochy said in the above post... everything being taken out of context bugs me. i love weirdness... mario is ridiculous in his own world... i also love games like MGS. putting them together is what's got my panties in a bunch!
still, you've all convinced me that i'd be remiss not to at least give this one a shot. i bet my wife will dig it too!
thanks for the discussion.-
It's kind of fun taking it out of context and exposing you to different things. I've always thought Link was a bad ass and never had much respect for anything in the Pokemon series. But now I can play as Link and rush with excitement to grab a powerful pokeball before my opponent can, all while listening to classic mario music.
