It’s been a wild month of running for your boy. I’ve managed to go three times a week, for the entire month of March, and I’m only a few sessions out from completing my goal. The weather has certainly not helped at all, but that’s just something you need to expect when you make plans.
Now, my typical cadence is Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday, as this allows me to keep my weight workouts in while also giving me some time to recover. While I could just run every single day, I don’t really want to add more impact to my knees than is necessary, as I’m running outside on uneven ground and not a treadmill with some nice cushioning to it.
All that is to say I’m currently sitting at 55km, across 9 workout sessions, which is a little over 6km per workout. Unfortunately, my overall time has dipped a bit, including my 5km time. I’m just going to chalk this one up to the weather, which has resulted in piss poor running conditions. It’s either too dark to see and run at speed safely, raining heavily, or the ground is slick after the storm. All of this results in a slower speed as I focus more on not falling flat on my ass.
I do love this rainy weather, though. It’s shaking up the usual feeling of blistering heat and blinding light. There is, of course, the other problem in that my shoes are water and sweat-logged. Like, it’s really gross. There’s so much moisture in the air, and not enough drying sunlight, that they’ve been unable to rid themselves of the sweat, rain, or puddles I’ve splashed through. I could very well be in need of new shoes soon.
And on that topic, I’m wondering if I should seek out an actual athlete place as opposed to my local sporting goods store. I think I could do with someone actually monitoring or analysing my walking pattern and seeing if I need a specific type of shoe. I love the ones I have now, but I always wonder if I could have something better and more suited to my foot.
The advantages of a good running shoe are certainly not lost on me. Back when I was young I had cheap ones, which wore out quickly, but also wore out my knee. The lack of proper support left my knee in some incredible pain in my teenage years. Since then, I’ve never second-guessed the price tag of a good pair of running shoes. I’m not messing around with that again.
For now, though, these running shoes are pretty great. If only they’d dry out. But I don’t think that’s going to happen any time soon if this weather continues. What I do know is that with four running days left, I’m easily going to hit that 80km mark this month. Then it’s back to my usual 5km twice a week with a focus on speed. Maybe even a cheeky 10 or 12km run in there if I’m feeling a bit playful.
