I live-streamed Mega Man 7 Monday for the Stevetendo show. It's not a secret that I do not like Mega Man 11 and thought it was the worst mainline Mega Man game. That was my opinion on things UNTIL last night when I tried Mega Man 7 again. I've said it once and I'll say it again, Mega Man 7 is my new least favorite Mega Man game.
For those who don't know, I'm a big fan of Mega Man. If I wasn't I wouldn't be playing them in order on the Stevetendo show on Monday nights at 9 p.m. EST. However, there are two Mega Man games I'm not looking forward to playing on the channel, Mega Man 11 and the train wreck that is Mega Man 7. When our chat starts to complain that a a game stinks, then you usually know it isn't a very good game.
The gameplay moves too slow for my liking and it's like night and day comparing it to other Mega Man games on the Super Nintendo, such as Mega Man X. All of Mega Man's motions feel way too slow. Just running to get through each stage feels like a chore to do. Charging you Mega Buster takes too long as well. The robot masters are fine but they don't really prepare you for the Dr. Wily's castle levels after you beat said robots. Some of the weapons you get from robot masters just don't work against some robots. Another things that annoys me is that you can only hold four "E-Tanks." That wouldn't be so bad if the prior games in the series didn't allow you to hold eight and nine. It also feels like the final boss of Dr. Wily has an unavoidable attack so I say don't try it without e-tanks as you're gonna need to heal.
I'm love video game music and some of the music is good in Mega Man 7. Certain levels like Turboman and Shademan have really good level themes. Springman, who is one of the worse robot masters, has a bad theme. The same could be said for the boss theme in Mega Man 7 where it doesn't get you pumped for the fight. It was mentioned by quite a few in chat that the boss theme didn't work for them.
Mega Man 11 was my least favorite Mega Man in the series but that isn't the case anymore. However, that could all change again when I eventually get to playing Mega Man 11 on the Stevetendo show in only a few short weeks.
