I’m just discovering Devin Townsend

Learned about Devin Townsend through a YouTube reaction video, and I can’t believe I’ve been missing out this long.

x-Rumpo-x

Few things excite me as much as seeing others excited or full of joy. This is what led me to start watching some reaction videos on YouTube. It’s there that I started seeing voice coaches react to a Devin Townsend song called Kingdom, which he performed for EMGtv seven years ago.

Now, it’s not uncommon to just not hear of a singer or band, even if they are popular within certain groups of folks. You may not hear of a famous guitarist simply because you’re not interested in guitars. Devin Townsend, however, is Canadian, and Canadians are known for being ultra-aware of Canadian talent and telling every American who speaks of said talent that they are, in fact, Canadian.

You’re a big Ryan Gosling fan? He’s Canadian. Larry Walker was a great baseball player, you say? He’s also Canadian. Oh, Steve Nash is Canadian. You like Drake? Drake’s Canadian. Justin Bieber? Not sure where that guy’s from.

The point is, I’m loving Devin Townsend’s music, and I’m shocked that I simply haven’t heard – or don’t recall hearing – about him. He feels like the kind of Canadian treasure that you want to brag about to any American who will listen. The problem with that is I’m fairly sure a whole bunch of Americans are fully aware of who Devin Townsend is and I’m just a bad Canadian about to lose my Tim Hortons Stamp of Canadian Approval.

If you aren’t familiar with Devin Townsend, have a watch of the two videos I’ve embedded here. They are wild.

Love Devin Townsend! He was the last show I got to go to before quarantine. The last anything I got to do before quarantine, really. Saw him early March in Philly and he was excellent as always. Glad he's got another fan!

Same here; in all of 2020 I was only able to see Vader 🤘👹 and Devin Townsend. Both incredible live acts in their own rights. That was where my girl learned to like Heavy Devy

More incredible Devin performances to check out:

Stormbending, Higher, or Deep Peace live from Plovdiv
Mountaintop or Flight from Casualties of Cool
Love?! or Detox from Strapping Young Lad
Funeral and Bastard from his album Ocean Machine
Grace live from the Retinal Circus
Supercrush, Awake, Kingdom, or Numbered live from By a Thread

I used to post so much Devin stuff here that people started to complain, so I've stopped. I also discovered Devin thanks to posters here, speciflcally the performance of his album Addicted from By a Thread that made me go down the Devin rabbit hole. He performs Kingdom live in both By a Thread and Retinal Circus with the full band and Anneke there to back him up (you can hear her voice on the choruses in the EGM TV performance). Anything with both Devin and Anneke is gold, and Devin and Che (Casualties of Cool) is also a great combo.

I just listened to his latest podcast where he talks about Deconstruction, but goes off on a tangent mostly about the new stuff he is working on, "PUZZLES" and "SNUGGLES".

And then he also mentions working with a PRODUCER (?????) for the album that will come out after those. Woah. I've kinda always wanted Devin to do this. I was wondering if he would work with Henning Pauly (who has produced albums and has interviewed Devin a few times). That would be cool. But TBH it would be crazy cool if Devin worked with, like, BOB ROCK or some big name producer.

Awesome! Incidentally I'd known about Devin since his album with Steve Vai, but I didn't buy one of his albums until SYNCHESTRA (still one of my faves) was released in 2006.

Infinity, Synchestra, Ki, Epicloud, EMPATH, and his "debut" Ocean Machine are my faves.

I also made a big list of some of my fave Devin songs for a friend of mine a few years ago, and updated it when his last album came out.

Here's a big copy paste of the entire list from my Word doc.

I am not saying this is his best music, just the ones I happen to enjoy.

I tried to pick just 2-3 from each album, but like for example some albums I love everrrrrything sooooooo :) Some of the notes I wrote are dumn, but who cares.

30+ songs from Devin Townsend, spanning his entire solo career.

        From “Ocean Machine” (1997):
        1. Seventh Wave – These first 2 songs are from his first solo album “Ocean Machine”. Very “wall of sound”.
        2. Life – LOVE this song and the lyrics. “My life is all that I've known. And it's all that keeps me here. My time is all that I own. So I won't let it slip away... My life…”

        From “Infinity” (1998):
        3. Christeen – The song & album that got me into Devin Townsend. The first 4 songs from “Infinity” are 4 of my favourite opening tracks ever
        4. Bad Devil – Think really heavy weird Alice Cooper
        5. War – Killer riff

        From “Physicist” (2000):
        6. Namaste – Pretty heavy. “Remember NA-MAS-TE!”
        7. Kingdom – A live favourite

        From “Terria” (2001):
        8. Earth Day – One of his most popular YouTube videos is his old band performing this song in its entirety live in a studio setting. Again, super heavy.
        9. Canada – His home and native land!

        From “Accelerated Evolution” (2003):
        10. Depth Charge – Killer opening track
        11. Deadhead – Again, super heavy, but it’s actually a song I think about the pain of being away from your love.

        From “Synchestra” (2006)
        12. Let It Roll – From “Synchestra” basically the first time he formed the core band that he’s used ever since. Devin starting to chill out.
        13. Vampira – Also from “Synchestra”, wicked riff, song about Vampires, \m/ and also a hilarious video

        From “Ziltoid the Omniscient” (2007)
        14. Solar Winds – The little into bit you can skip (part of a concept album “Ziltoid The Omniscient”, the puppet I have in my office), this is a beautiful song among a CD of mostly REALLY HEAVY stuff
        15. Hyperdrive – One of my favourite Devin songs, it was redone a few years later on his 2009 “Addicted!” album with Anneke van Giersbergen on vocals (but I prefer this original version)

        From “Ki” (2009):
        16. Coast – Pretty chill song that just builds
        17. Heaven Send – Like many songs on this album goes from a chill beginning to craziness

        From “Addicted!” (2009):
        18. Bend It Like Bender! – An album of poppier, heavy songs. (Yup, THAT Bender)
        19. Ih-Ah! – Beautiful.

        From “Deconstruction” (2011):
        20. Planet Of The Apes – It’s my favourite track on my least favourite DTP album.

        From “Ghost” (2011):
        21. Fly – Opening track that I often listen to on long drives, very atmospheric and dreamy
        22. Ghost – Absolute happiness in song form

        From “EPICLOUD” (2012):
        23. Lucky Animals (The New Beige) – Love this riff/song, simple but maybe his best production sound ever.
        24. Liberation – Also from “EPICLOUD” and a super cool riff/song
        25. Where We Belong – “EPICLOUD” melancholy song

        From “Casualties of Cool” (2014):
        26. Mountaintop – Devin does a Country/Folk side project with a female singer as “Casualties Of Cool”

        From “Z2” (2014):
        27. Sky Blue – These next 2 songs are from his “Z2” album that was done originally thru PledgeMusic. He did a sequel to “Ziltoid”, but also had a bunch of other songs that turned into a more traditional “Sky Blue” album.
        28. March of the Poozers – LOL

        From “Transcendence” (2016):
        29. Failure – My favourite song form his latest (2016) album, “Transcendence”
        30. Secret Sciences – The very next song on “Transcendence”

        From “EMPATH” (2019):
        31. Genesis – One of the singles from “EMPATH”, all of his styles in one song

        32. Spirits Will Collide – Gotta see the video for this one! A slower song, but it’s got a great screaming vocal along with the trademarks of the album (a choir and all kinds soundscapes).

My first experience with him was the Steve Vai Sex & Religion record which I still really like. Saw him live on that tour and him trading licks with Vai at age 19 and matching him every step of the way was insane. Seen him many times since and while I don't dip into his music a lot of on record I will always catch his shows.

all the stuff posted here is great, but if you want to go to the beginning go listen to Vai's Sex and Religion. That album has Steve Vai, TM Stevens, Terry Bozio, and Devin still stands out.

I like his “no backing tracks, everything live” band setup right now (well, his last live setup anyways).

The Plovdiv concert was cool but then when you watch Order Of Magnitude live it’s more obvious how much of his previous show was set to a click track and used backing tracks, etc.

eh, I have seen both. instead of Devin using his pedals and guitar to run the tracks, its Diego the keyboard guy (who is from Haken) is doing everything. For sure, there are more people on stage and less prerecorded, but the sound also isn't as full. plus I liked the guys in DTP and think some of the new folks aren't as strong players. eh

It infuriates me how many shitty Canadian artists are built up by Canadian media while artists like Devin live in obscurity for most of their career. It took him until just a few years ago to get his first Juno (for the Z2 album, I think). Totally ridiculous.

He's amazing live and seems like a pretty genuine person. I even met him once at the Junos (not the one where he got an award unfortunately) when they were here in Vancouver! He was with Che Aimee Dorval (they did Casualties of Cool together), who was also super nice!
