Medical is usually in competition with recreational use (even though technically they shouldn't have to be this way) but the money is so good from medical marijuana they usually fight against making recreational use legal.

If you have no tolerance 10mg should get you a light buzz, but give it at least an hour to "kick in" before you have any more. Too much will put you in a spinning room for houuuuurs.

        10mg is a lot for a newbie.

I think it's unfortunate that it's the starting dosage most producers seem to have settled on. Enough to send someone without tolerance to Pluto for a day and really not have a great time if they take it all at once. If they take 10 mg and then double it because they don't feel anything after 30 minutes... Well that's when existential dread and panic kicks in.

Would love a 'lightweight' edible that came in 2.5 or 5 mg dosage.

That is true, but beside my point.

It's not about what you can do or know as an experienced user.

It's about what a new person seeing the common dose of 10mg and not realizing the pitfalls might infer to do. 10 mg is not a good starting point for zero-tolerance people, and that is what it seems like people are led to starting out with it being the standard.

My point is the starting point should be a lot lower, and yeah I tell people to quarter their dosage whenever I hear they aren't familiar with edibles. As well as to wait for it to kick in before touching any more as long as it may take.

            • reply
              February 6, 2021 1:28 PM

^^^ Even people used to smoking/vaping weed will experience those pitfalls, since they are accustomed to quicker effects and not as strong a dosage at once. Dispensaries may ask 'Are you familiar with cannabis' and the smoker (who has never tried edibles) will then not bother with the usual warnings.

Places I go will routinely throw in free edibles when I buy vape carts. I know my way around them now but only learned to be more careful the hard way.

I am elated that Maddog seems to have had a good experience despite apparently taking a full dose. Guessing either he had a good lunch or is more open to change than I am.

Low dose edibles are pretty available in CA, but I’ve found a lot of places don’t carry them because that’s not their regular clientele. It’s a bit of a pain. Brands that were perfect for me, I just can’t find, even after calling around. Then we have to experiment with other brands, cutting stuff in half, etc and not having the sure fire high which was what was great about legal edibles in the first place.

Consistency has been the problem for me. My wife found 10mg enjoyable as a very first time cannabis experience, but the third time she tried it that same 10mg was way too strong for her and she hasn't touched it since. I'm not sure that lab standards are exactly uniform between states/farmers when determining potency.

            February 6, 2021 3:02 PM

THC is fat soluble, eating foods with a higher fat content prior to ingestion increases overall potency. Might account for some variability in effects.

I'm not aware of what the threshold for variability in the actual content of THC in an edible is by lab standards.

I believe some independent testing on edibles in shops also found that the strength was actually highly variable within packages on top of the personal/situational variables involved so it is just generally a pain in the ass to get right

I was recently introduced to edibles by a good friend who wanted to help me with my knee pain.. which is constant. she warned me about the strength of the taffies she brought me and I just smiled and nodded not fully understanding since I don't smoke, have never had any experience with cannibas in any shape or form at all.

So after sitting on them for a while I finally had a bad night of soreness and tried one. waited 10 minutes - nothing. had a second one.. waited another 5-10 minutes and started getting a little floaty but not what I expected. then had a third and by this time the first one kicked in and I was suddenly the master of time space and all I surveyed. my thoughts were razor sharp and I was figuring out random calculations in my head that I didn't even know existed. then the second one kicked in and I was plastered to my seat, still having amazing insights on the earth, the air between me and the earth, the molecules in between me, the air, the earth and my seat.. at this point I was tripping balls and somehow slogged off to bed and then my head was pasted to my pillow - unable to move, but still wide-eyed contemplating the next generation of intradimensional warp drive (I had already invented two different forms on the way to my bed) and the bed was spinning.

I remember really having to pee.. getting up and almost falling head first into the toilet and then I was famished. like a hunger I've never had before in my life - so I hobbled/floated to the kitchen, had a bowl of cereal and then stumbled back to bed.

I think I woke up at 1PM the next morning with an entire bale of cotton stuffed in my head, depressed that I didn't write any of my amazing calculations down.

so TL;DR - give it time, sparky. it'll get there.

But you forgot about the pain for a while, right? :-P

I always quarter my edibles and wait for the first 1/4 to kick in before touching another 1/4. I'm a lightweight. I find I don't need much of a dose to wipe out my aches and pains and it's usually well below the threshold of becoming in-tune with the background radiation of the universe.

If you haven't tried listening to your favorite music yet on edibles, it'll be like the first time hearing them again except with a whole new level of experience.

I am sure the brand matters a lot. I had one cream years ago that did absolutely nothing, but this Papa & Barkley Releaf works fine. The only drawback is it does lose potency after you open a jar. Kind of have to either use it up quickly or be willing to get a new jar if you’re getting to the expiration date.

I bet you could make your own with a good quality oil tincture and just mix it with a nice natural shea butter cream with some eucalyptus oil in there for soothing.

I could potentially see that, but just strictly for fast uptake, not having your body digesting anything else works well. I’ll usually eat something soon after I am feeling something, before I lose the will to putter around in the kitchen, but I do tend to be a bit opposite land and lose my appetite when I get really blazed.

    • reply
      February 6, 2021 3:13 PM

Yeah, this is why I don't like edibles. Once you eat it, you're committed and I am not sure they've got the dosing accuracy down that well.

I appreciate the pretty immediate feedback you get from smoking, it's really hard to go too far with that and if you do, it fades faster than an edible high.

That said, if you're looking for chronic pain relief edibles are going to be better than smoking I think. Lasts longer and the high is better for that generally.

These are my feelings as well. When you smoke you are high in about 5 minutes, with a peak probably around 30 min or so. Then after an hour you will start to come down a little bit and you can decide if you want to smoke more to keep the feeling going. Then in about 2-3 hours you'll get the munchies and be ready for bed. This is with indica strains anyways, which is all I smoke as I'm looking just to relax in the evenings.

If your lungs can take it I really think pre-rolled joints are the way to go. Effects are nearly immediate, said effects don't last as long, and you can ensure you don't overdo it by lightly puffing away. They also tend to be cheaper in my experience. Newbies love edibles because they don't make you cough, but they just have so much more potential to wreck you.

I’m very sensitive to pot. Even in my youth, using it daily, I never developed a tolerance the way some people do.

I’d say this for gauging your use: if you are finding you’re not increasing your dosages to feel the same way, you’re probably just fine.

Something that I notice, as a very sensitive sort, is depending on a few factors, I might catch myself feeling a little too floaty days after using...like just a bit foggy around the edges. If I run into that, I just stop until I feel totally back to my usual and then add at least a few weeks more of not using on top of that. I rarely use any kind of pot product more than 2-3 times a month, based on that.

When it comes to sore muscles, I do everything possible for them, including stretching, Epsom salt baths, more sleep, heat and cold packs, before I resort to pot. I prefer to use pot when I’m already feeling very good/healthy as opposed to using it to try to feel better. This guarantees me good experiences and low impact on my body.
