I return to you folk with more tales of my foolish expenditures. Why continue to spin the hamster wheel each week if not to earn enough scratch to waste on the most inconvenient way to consume music? I'm gonna share a few of my recent cops from online record purchasing (as I live in the heart of a southern swamp that is literally 195 miles from the nearest record emporium).
With all that out of the way, I present these to you, the curious reader. Don't forget to shower me in social medias and upvotes and hearts. Additionally, please respond in the comments if you know of some hot new music I should be wasting money on. Daddi is sick and needs his medicine.
Delvon Lamar Organ Trio - I Told You So
2021 first pressing on pink wax via Colemine Records
I am a sucker for classic R&B, soul, and funk. I am possibly the world's biggest sucker for the dulcet tones of the Hammond B3 organ. This band gives me what I want. They are a three-piece I discovered via KEXP's outsanding Youtube Channel. It only took about 15 seconds of hearing their rendition of Curtis Mayfield's Move On Up before I had multiple limbs gyrating with glee. The new album is full of bangers, including the best cover of Careless Whisper I've heard. I cannot recommend this one enough.
Hum - Inlet
2020 2XLP issue via Earth Analog Records
I've always kind of liked Hum, but never enough to buy any albums. They were semi-big in the 90s and then kind of went away for 20 years. They popped back up last year out of the blue and dropped a new album titled Inlet. Spoilers: It rips. I grew up on the 90s alt-rock stuff and if you told me this came out in 1996, I would have no reason to doubt the claim based on what I'm hearing. Loads of spacey distortion and a laid-back vibe that puts me in a good mood make for a fun hour of listening. As a bonus, this particular LP release is mastered for vinyl and cut by Ryan K. Smith, a guy who is better known for countless audiophile jazz and prestige reissues. It be sound good.
Valve Studio Orchestra - Fight Songs: The Music Of Team Fortress 2
2017 2XLP issue on translucent 2 Fort red and blue wax via Ipecac
I would assume there is no need to jusitfy this purchase on this website. TF2 is one of the best games I've ever played and I'm proud to own the definitive version of its soundtrack. This particular release slipped away from me on the first go-around as I heard it had QC issue and by the time I thought about buying it later, it had gone out of print ($$$$). Lucky for me, it got repressed and can be had for normal money. This copy is the Orange variant (there are 5 total issues, each with their own unique poster) and also comes with a code for an in-game hat (of fucking course it does). Now the challenge will be to prevent myself from aquiring the whole set so I can get all the posters (that I don't need). Hell yeah.
Nina Simone - Pastel BLues
2020 Acoustic Sounds Series issue on black wax via Verve/uME
I've been wanting a copy of this one for a while, but the well-known audiophile reissues have either been prohibitively expensive or impossible to find in stock (or both). A recent partnership with Verve and Acoustic Sounds has resulted in a new series of prestige record releases that aim to bring the best possible quality while not charging an arm and a leg. Each LP in this series is all analog, pressed at QRP in Kansas (widely considered to be the world's best press at the moment), and housed in a very nice jacket. Like the Hum record above, this one was handled by Ryan K. Smith at Sterling Sound. Supposedly this series will remain in print and affordable going forward, but I'm not taking any chances, so I secured mine already.
Jane's Addiction – Ritual De Lo Habitual
2020 2XLP 45RPM issue on translucent pearl via Rhino
More 90s rock — shocking right? Nothing's Shocking (get it). This LP had a reissue in the mid-2000s that went out of print really fast, causing stupid prices on the secondhand market. The kind folks at Rhino decided to spend some cash to bring it back and offer the definitve version. This issue is spread over 2 LPs at 45RPM and was mastered/cut by the legendary Bernie Grundman. It was originally supposed to come out last October as part of Rhino's Rocktober 2020 reissue campaign, but got delayed into late November. For reasons I can't explain, this one is near impossible to find at MSRP, despite being a new release. That said, the sound quality is *insert italian hand gesture*
Anyway, thanks for stopping by for my livejournal and I hope to see you next time when I share more dumb shit that I shouldn't have bought!
