New Games For Old Systems (Part 3 of ?)

Metroidvanias have been the cat's pajamas for new systems for years now, but what if you don't have a system that can play Ori, Hollow Knight, Dead Cells, or Castle in the Clouds? Are you stuck replaying Aria of Sorrow and Cave Story AGAIN? Heck no! Let's take a look at some more Psytronik Software releases that adopt elements of the concept while being their own distinct thing.

Hessian (C64)

First, there's Lasse Öörni's fantastic Hessian and Steel Ranger games, which are an evolution of his Metal Warrior franchise but without the same level of self aware, over the top dark heavy metal comedy.

Hessian places you in the role of a low level security officer named Kim and beings with you waking up in a cargo container converted into an emergency room, confused and with only the memory of the security system turning you. The game plays similar to Impossible Mission mashed up with Turrican, with rockin' music, smooth scrolling, and a massive map to explore in order to solve the mystery and save the world.

In 2020, the soundtrack was actually released on vinyl in limited quantities and like most SID soundtracks that I've heard in the format, it's awesome. I never would have guessed that a lossy analog audio format would be ideal for chiptunes, so it's a very happy surprise to be able to enjoy the soundtrack in that way. In conjunction with the vintage soundtrack, a limited edition cartridge was produced for the optimal experience when playing on an original C64.

Just this week an update was released for theC64 and theC64mini adding it to the carousel as a free game, hopefully introducing yet more people to it (assuming the $2 price point is too high for some reason).

Steel Ranger (C64)

This time, it's 2218 and you're on a military patrol craft investigating a remote planet when your ship comes under attack, leaving you as the sole person left able to uncover the mystery of what's happening and potentially saving the human race.

Steel Ranger cranks the action up further into the realm of run n gun while still retaining a vast map to unlock and explore. Gameplay is much more directly influenced by Super Metroid and Turrican this time as you traverse over a dozen different environments; the classic Metroid map screen is a highly welcome addition to the gameplay and the smooth action is complemented by yet another fantastic soundtrack (a common trait of the Covert Bitops games).

Knight n Grail (C64)

Developed by Wide Pixel Games back in the olden days of 2009, KnG is a polished, high quality action/adventure where you play as the titular knight, seeking to free your beloved from a mage's curse by retrieving the grail. It features over 200 "screens" rather than a smooth scrolling map, though it retains a lot of the elements of gated progression, character evolution, and gameplay that are typical of the genre.

Despite being "older", KnG is a remarkably modern experience and highly recommended. Psytronik rereleased the physical edition in its Ultimate Edition format in 2019 (limited to 100 copies) and RGCD did a limited production cartridge in 2012 for people that wanted to avoid the long initial load time entirely.

Pains n Aches (C64)

It took until 2018 for KnG to get a sequel, but PnA more than lived up to expectations. The storyline is a direct continuation of KnG, but this time you play from the perspective of the antagonist of the first game. Basic gameplay is similar to KnG, but now combat is magic-based and free exploration takes place across two massive maps. Virtually every aspect of the game has been refined and improved and map design has been similarly evolved.

Neither KnG not PnA will stress your hardcore gaming skills, but they're both highly enjoyable and deliver a terrific, cohesive adventure.

Disclaimer: All photos were lifted from the official product pages without permission. No review copies were offered or accepted, but I've purchased all of these titles multiple times in both physical and digital formats. I have two different collector's editions of Hessian and just got the cart when I got the vinyl record. What I'm sayin' is that the game is the bee's knees and you need to play it if you have even a glancing interest in the larger genre or even just action/adventure/run n guns. Thank me later.

I really need to look into that. Been messing around with emulators for my Pi 400 that's hooked to an old TV. If I get a c64 emulator working with joystick support Ill need to check it out.

I used the RetroPie install script to do all of the heavy lifting for me for all of that stuff! I need to stop being so lazy and get BMC64 running on it though

Uuuuuugggghhhh. Sigh, no. I started the path to upgrading my pc so I need to finish that. Mrazzino helped me secure the cpu. Now I'm trying to decide on which board to go with so I can pick my ram and get things put together. Need to finish those purhcases before I consider another project. Plus, my wife's birthday is in 2 weeks and I'm already feeling bad for spending his kind of money on myself so close to her birthday. But, opportunity knocked on an actually MSRP priced cpu so I couldn't pass it up.

I'll add it to my wishlist for my birthday in Sept or for Christmas.

BUT, I'm going to bookmark so much of your stuff to come back to once I do get something. I need to push some junk around and make space for it anyways. Have a 720p tv on the wall doing nothing next to my pc so I just need to get something under that tv to put the Maxi on. Seriously 1st world problems.

Nope, I have a physical copy from before 8bitguy was a known dirtbag, but I haven't gotten around to playing it yet. Protovision just released an updated cart of it a few months ago and it's about the only game they've published that I don't have. They're pretty awesome and located not that far away from here :D

What's the issue with 8bitguy? He's a bit quirky, but he seemed like a decent guy when I met him a few years back.

He's a hard open carry nutter that likes to troll gun control advocates, including mocking grieving families from Sandy Hook. After he pulled that shit, he was dead to me

There is also a clip of him saying sandy hook was a false flag operation. How low can he go? I’ve watched a few of his videos since but I’ve mostly replaced him with other youtubers. Except for small niches, his knowledge of 8 bit computers is really limited.

I don't really follow him outside of his 2 youtube channels. Although he did have one really odd video about AI. It caused so much backlash he pulled it from his channel. Just on your now 3 Cortex articles there's enough material there to cover 4-6 episodes if you explore some of the development background or even the tech behind the game if you can get the dev to participate.

I had a Tandy 1000SX growing up. I was always so happy when I found a game that would take advantage of its enhanced graphics and sound capabilities. I remember listening to the opening music on Thexder just because it took full advantage of 3 voice sound. He's covered Tandy graphics in some of his videos.

The 1000 was my first PC. I always thought it was odd my dad bought me that vs a C64. Since it had to have a monitor that was a much more expensive investment than the C64 that could use a tv. Looking back I think that was probably one of the most influential things my parents ever did. I think if I had a C64 instead I might have gone down a different career path. Can't say why exactly.

Tandy 1000TX kid, checking in. How are we not all best friends in our own little Tandy group that conveniently pretends that the CoCo was never a thing? Because we totally had it better than those CoConuts.

HEY NOW! I had a CoCo 2 and a 1000SX. Jeez, now I'm realizing I'd forgotten my timeline. I had the coco2 well before the 1000. I even went to a little summer camp for the coco2 programing. It was in the Radio Shack repair center. About 6-8 kids. It was an odd thing. Didn't really learn anything new in there. In fact, I remember teaching the instructor about how much you could do with PEEK and POKE and how you could change the CPU speed with that. Haha.. He warned me not to do that in class. I used to type in long programs in basic from some magazine. I struggled with the limits of basic graphical commands. Eventually I got a disk drive for the thing. OH, ya, my first modem was on the coco2. Some 300 baud modem thing that connected to the cartridge slot. That cable wasn't included with the modem and I begged my grandfather to buy it for me. I remember it was like $50 back then. That's an ouch even today.

Then the 1000 came and DOS was a whole new thing.

I picked up a CoCo2 to play Downland (it doesn't work out of the box on a CoCo3), but I've never been a huge fan of the CoCo2 and Dragon32 style...it's...a pretty ugly system. The CoCo3 is just freaking loaded with untapped potential and people have done some amazing stuff with it, but now that I have a CoCoSDC, I think I'm going to sell the CoCo2 :(

I don't have real big sentiment for the coco2 like I do with other systems. I just remembered I had the printer too. Sold it all to some guy to do word processing on. I think having the printer and the disk drive was what sold him on it. I never had a coco3 so not real sure what its capabilities were. I guess I should go check some videos if it had stuff that never got fully utilized back in the day.

Just rewatched these trailers. I'm still impressed by these titles. The smooth scroll and animation on Steel Ranger is just awesome. All of them are a step up technically from most titles of the era. Just awesome. I really may need to get a Maxi for my b-day later in the year and try these new games. They just all look so impressive.

          Buuut, where's part 4??? ;)
