I return to you folk with tales of my foolish expenditures. Why continue to spin the hamster wheel each week if not to earn enough scratch to waste on the most inconvenient way to consume music? I'm gonna share a few of my recent cops from online record purchasing (as I live in the heart of a southern swamp that is literally 195 miles from the nearest record emporium.
With all that out of the way, I present these to you, the curious reader. Don't forget to shower me in social medias and upvotes and hearts.
Mastodon - Remission
2019 reissue from Relapse on 2x12" blue/purple pinwheels (cut at 45 RPM)
With this one, I filled in one of the big gaps in my Mastodon collection. I've never owned a vinyl copy of Remission before and I was kind of waiting for a deluxe reissue that would include some of the B-sides from this era (I am thirsty for their cover of Thin Lizzy's Emerald that is on some CD issues of Remission_). That reissue never came and I couldn't resist this one at $15. Mastodon LPs cut at 45RPM are not super-common and 45RPM versions of Crack the Skye, The Hunter, and Blood Mountain all sound shockingly better than their CD/33RPM counterparts with boosted dynamic range. Relapse doesn't shrinkwrap their stuff, so whipping out the discs for pics was easy here.
Talking Heads - The Name of This Band is Talking Heads
2021 Rhino issue 2XLP on red wax at 33RPM (part of 2021 SYEOR campaign)
I've never been ableto score a cheap clean copy of this on the secondhand market in a few years of searching, so I caved and picked up this reissue from Rhino Records. It had been previously available for a couple of years from Rhino on black wax, but I figured it would be fun to get this limited red edition. While I prefer Stop Making Sense for my live Talking Heads Fix, there is no vinyl version that has all the songs feature from the movie or Bluray edition. This complilation from a few years prior is loaded with hot stuff and thew few Rhino Talking Heads resissues I have all sound phenomenal.
Killer Mike - R.A.P. Music
2021 VMP club issue 2XLP on clear w/splatter discs
I've enjoed this album for several years and consider it to be part of the Run the Jewels family (as EL-P provided all the beats). I never picked up previous isssues of this and they had gotten expensive on the secondhand market with it being out of print. This new reissue from the Vinyl Me Please record club is a 2XLP package where the second disc has the album instrumentals (that are awesome). I'm not a big fan of VMP, but I was able to snag this at cost from a memeber who was unloading it (it was the VMP record of the month for Janurary 2021).
GWAR - Scumdogs of the Universe
2020 Slave Pit reissue 2XLP on transluscent red with smoky swirls
How could you not pick this up? Like the Talking Heads LP above, I was never able to snag a clean used copy of Scumdogs, despite years of trying. I held off on picking up the flimsy Metalblade reissue from a couple of years back in hopes of a deluxe anniversary reissue and my wish was granted. This version of the album gets reworked cover art (that I do prefer to the original) and it comes in a thick quality jacket with a pair of red LPs that sound much better than my old CD. It's also cool to have this art in a larger, high-quality format. I only wish I had been born sooner so that I could have experienced the thrill of getting sprayed in the face with red goo from Oderus Urungus' big hog at a live show.
Anyway, thanks for stopping by for my livejournal and I hope to see you next time when I share more dumb shit that I shouldn't have bought!
