Clear day at Mt. St. Helens and Coldwater Lake

Clear day at Mt. St. Helens and Coldwater Lake

Nature therapy.

Nixx2004

I knew it was going to be a clear day, so I want to go so a mountain. I hadn't been to Mt. St. Helens since October, so I decided to go there. The road to the end is closed, but you can still get some views.

Get up at 1 AM. Leave around 2 AM. At 3 AM in Tacoma I pass a rollover accident that had just happened. Get gas at 4 AM. Arrive at Castle Lake viewpoint at 5 AM. I get some photos, including what I'm sure is the Milky Way, but it's not too interesting really.

5:58 AM. A 10 minute exposure. There were some meteors happening, too. 2560x1440

8:27 AM. Honestly it was a really bad sunrise. There were no clouds, and the sun was coming from almost behind the mountain. So I didn't really get any sunrise shots. I moved from Castle Lake viewpoint down to the end of the road at Hummocks trailhead. 3000x2000

8:40 AM. I went back to Coldwater Lake. I like these hills. I got this shot with the beach in it, but I also got some 'clean' reflections. 3000x2000

8:53 AM. I was looking for artistic stuff and saw the sun hitting the tops of these trees. 3000x2000

8:56 AM. Coldwater Lake had ice along the edges. 2400x1600

8:58 AM. One of the downed trees, probably from the blast. I cropped out some on the left side. I like this image because you can't see the sky, except for in the reflection, and the reflection gives a very clear different angle on the tree. 2000x2000

9:09 AM. Similar idea, can't see the sky except in the reflection. I like the ducks giving it a bit of action. 3000x2000

9:44 AM. I'm on my way home, but looking for things. I like the patterns in the trees with the light and shade, and the bridge. 2560x1400

That's it. I had a nice day, but it wasn't quite as good for pictures as I hoped. I got some more mildly interesting star photos if someone wants.

Be well.

Chatty preview. I cropped it a bit, you think it was a mistake to crop the reflection?

Here's a similar photo from October 22. The fog was nice that day.

I arrived about 3 hours before sunrise. It was fucking dark. Could really notice the light pollution from Vancouver/Portland.

2 hours before sunrise it was noticeably brighter.

1 hour before sunrise was basically daytime when it came to seeing stars.

What a mind boggling amount of material to just explode in to the atmosphere. I keep wondering when Baker or Rainer are going to go up in the same way.

Yes. About 80 million swimming pools worth. Or 300,000 Grand Canyons.

I made all that up. Depends on what you're counting. They say 1.4 billion cubic yards of ash.

What do you think of this one? I had to figure out the editing on this one, the original was too dark.

As you can see, sunrise was pretty lame.

There was just a glow on the foothills, no direct sunlight on the mountain. Now I know that January is a bad time. The sun at sunrise will be in a better position in the summer.

That first one especially is amazing, are you selling any of this? High resolution digital versions of some of these I would love :D That first one is wallpaper material!

Love the third one, although I wish it was a bit further back.

That water close-up is pretty great as well, super graphic. Think I'm gonna try it as my desktop background.

8:10 AM. I was looking at this one and think I finally figured out a crop that works. 100% crop to 2560x1440.

It's a little soft, but I like the sunrise light, and the evergreens poking above the other trees.

Different version of Coldwater Lake. Since the reflection wasn't very smooth at this location I used a tree in the foreground. I like how the angles line up.

5:34 AM. I'm 99% sure that's the Milky Way. I could see it with the naked eye, too. It was dark outside, and super clear.

The light in the foreground left side is another photographer that was there before me.
