With SDCC in full swing, Ghostbusters fans have been treated to a few nice announcements. One of these announcements was a new line of “Real Ghostbusters” action figures from the toy maker Mondo. The figures look amazing. As a huge fan of the show The Real Ghostbusters, I was instantly hooked. The figures come in a 2-pack: Egon Spengler and The Boogie Man, Peter Venkman and Samhain. The figures also come with a few accessories like mini ghosts, ghost traps, and proton packs!
Now comes the really depressing part. The figures cost $202.00 USD. You might think that’s fine because you’d assume they’re 1/6 scale, like some of Mondo’s X-Men 97’ figures, but the Real Ghostbusters are 1/12 scale, so they are about 6 inches in height. I’ve pretty much sworn off toys and action figures due to space, and having too many on a shelf can look, well, a little busy. I moved to more ‘high-end’ collectibles, like statues and replicas. However, these were something that I heavily reconsidered my thoughts on purchasing after the price was announced. Of course, I would want all four busters, but that would cost me north of $800.00 for action figures. It’s hard to not look at that price and wonder if the figures will sell well. Hasbro’s HasLabs Proton Pack was half that cost ($399.99), and the "Two in the Box" PKE and Ghost Trap was $299.99. I get that those products were crowdfunded, but it really is a hard sell when you compare them.
For this writer, and as a massive fan of The RGB series, this is a pretty tough task, and I feel it misses the mark of affordability for a lot of Ghostbusters fans. I'm clearly the target demographic for it. Why not sell each one by itself? $101 USD is an easier sell than $202 for a 2-pack. What if I don’t want Samhain? Or what if I just want the ghosts, instead of the buster? The price certainly is a shock as, according to a poll on Twitter from The Yes Have Some folks, people were expecting a price between $100-$150 USD.
The figures are set to be released starting this fall 2024 with the Peter Venkman & Samhain 2-pack, and the rest will be released around every quarter in 2025. What do you think? Too expensive? Will you pick them up?
