Modern Filmmakers' Overreliance on CGI Sacrifices Storytelling

Modern Filmmakers' Overreliance on CGI Sacrifices Storytelling

Between 'The Flash,' 'Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny' & now 'Wonka,' modern filmmakers need to be less dependent on CGI effects

In the world of cinema, technology has undoubtedly transformed the way stories are told. With the advent of Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI), filmmakers gained unprecedented freedom to bring their wildest imaginations to life on the silver screen. However, the unbridled reliance on CGI in recent years has, unfortunately, led to a decline in storytelling quality, as evidenced by the DC cinematic universe and the newly released "WONKA" trailer.

The DC cinematic universe is a prime example of how CGI can overshadow the narrative. In their pursuit to recreate the vivid and dynamic comic book worlds, filmmakers have often prioritized stunning visuals over coherent storytelling. Films like "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" and "Justice League" suffer from an excess of CGI-driven action sequences that detract from character development and emotional depth. The overuse of CGI in these films not only overwhelms the audience visually but also fails to create a lasting impact. It becomes difficult to form a genuine connection with the characters when their surroundings feel detached from reality, when nothing looks real around them.

Moreover, the newly released "WONKA" trailer offers another cautionary tale of CGI overpowering storytelling. The trailer showcases a visually stunning world, complete with whimsical landscapes and vibrant colors. However, the concern of an absence of a compelling narrative raises concerns about the film's potential quality. Instead of focusing on the intricacies of Wonka's character or exploring the themes that made Roald Dahl's original story timeless, the trailer bombards viewers with a barrage of CGI-driven spectacles. While impressive from a technical standpoint, this heavy reliance on CGI hints at a potential lack of substance and storytelling depth, leaving audiences wondering if the film can capture the magic of the original tale, which had 0 computer generated effects.

Filmmakers must strike a delicate balance between utilizing CGI as a tool for enhancing storytelling and ensuring that it does not overshadow the core elements that make a film memorable. The excessive use of CGI can become a crutch, leading to a loss of human connection and emotional resonance. The best films, regardless of their genre or budget, rely on strong characters, engaging narratives, and thought-provoking themes to captivate audiences. When CGI takes center stage, these essential storytelling components can be neglected or overshadowed, resulting in a shallow cinematic experience.

*Very little live action was used in Disney's "Live Action" remake of 'The Lion King" The irony....

It is essential for filmmakers to remember that CGI should serve as a means to an end rather than an end in itself. When used judiciously, CGI can enhance the visual spectacle of a film and contribute to the overall storytelling experience. Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" trilogy serves as a shining example of how practical effects and grounded storytelling can create a captivating and immersive cinematic universe. The realism and grittiness of Nolan's Batman films resonate with audiences because they focus on the characters and their journeys, rather than relying solely on eye-popping CGI.

*The Wonka trailer couldn't even be bothered to put an actor in a fat suit, they digitally made him fat. really WB? really?

Modern filmmakers must really stop their use of CGI, it's overshadowing storytelling. The DC cinematic universe and the "WONKA" trailer serve as stark reminders that excessive reliance on CGI can result in a loss of narrative depth and emotional resonance, but I don't think aaudience goers really care. By striking a balance between technology and storytelling, filmmakers can create memorable films that engage audiences on multiple levels. Ultimately, the absence of limitations in these big budget films, stifles creativity.

Jurassic Park had it right. They did everything to make the effects look as real as possible

“The t-Rex will look fake during the day”
So we’ll set the scene at night
“But the skin won’t look right unless it’s wet”
      So it’ll rain then

Now movies are just plopping CG anywhere on a whim made by the lowest bidding team of overworked artists. The filmmakers don’t even have the story ready before going to post production.
