Cocktail Fridays: Holiday Gold Rush

Cocktail Fridays: Holiday Gold Rush

This cocktail is based on a Gold Rush, which I learned about from comedian Aziz Ansari, and features allspice dram for that holiday spice note.

shotgun1

Recipe

  • 2 oz Bourbon
  • 1 tsp Allspice Dram
  • 3/4 oz Lemon Juice
  • 1 oz Honey Syrup (1.5 oz if you like it sweeter)
  • 1/2 oz Egg White
  1. Assemble ingredients in shaker tin
  2. Dry shake (hold on tight)
  3. Shake with ice vigorously
  4. Strain into old fashioned glass and top with ice

 Optional

  • Express oils from lemon peel and discard
  • Garnish with cinnamon stick

A few years ago I made this cocktail at a holiday gathering and everyone loved it but be careful with how much allspice dram you use, a little can go a long way. I haven't played around with it much since I developed this "holiday cocktail" but I bet some spiced, or cajun, rum would work well too.

Read about and learn how to make allspice dram on serious eats.

Here's a cocktail recipe I made at a holiday gathering a few years back that's based on a Gold Rush with allspice dram, bourbon, lemon and honey syrup.

Funny, was researching cocktail recipes with allspice on a whim just to see if there were any this afternoon. Went into a hole and found an Alton Brown allspice dram recipe that takes 10 days to finish and a cocktail I want to try along with yours.

Might start one tomorrow if the store doesn't carry any. For tonight, ended up making some Amaretto Sours for my family.

... pictures of amaretto sours or it didn't happen. I do like this recipe but I really do think replacing the bourbon with some spiced or cajun rum would be interesting and dusting it with some freshly grated nutmeg would be nice too. Also, my lemons are pretty sour right now so I think bumping up the honey syrup would be good at this time of year, as I proposed in the recipe. Have you been watching Alton live with his wife? He's gone off the rails a bit due to the election, like most of us, but his wife reminds me of my mom - a little too serious and crass but funny, smart, and thought provoking with a dash of silly.
