After talking about it for the past few weeks, all my hard work paid off. My team managed to clear the King’s Fall raid in Destiny 2 on Day One during Contest Mode. Sure, it took us about 22 hours to do it, but we dragged ourselves over the finish line, claimed our emblem, and rejoiced together at the mountain we had overcome. Take a look at the entire stream below!
One of the key challenges of completing a Day One raid is the timezone. While those in the Northern Hemisphere get to enjoy waking up at a reasonable time and relaxing a bit in the morning before the raid starts, down here in Australia it kicks off at 3am – so we’re already behind the 8 ball. It also means trying to get a decent sleep the night before. Anyone that’s done any sort of sleep schedule flip knows that pain all too well.
Thankfully, no matter how tired you are when getting up and starting, the adrenaline and rush of performing in a race keeps you wired. However, the fatigue starts to play a bigger role the longer into the raid you go, with players fading or struggling at different times.
As for the raid and mechanics itself, the slight updates to the flow lift the King’s Fall experience to new heights. The changes are just large enough so as to add more balls to juggle without drastically changing the entire feel.
For the most part, my team managed to clear most encounters with minimal fuss (all things considered). But there was one glaring roadblock that I’m fairly certain most players can agree on: Warpriest. Fighting this bloke was like running head first into a wall. It was a massive damage check for our team. We spent a lot of time here, definitely more than was needed, as we honed our strategy for eking out more damage. Then there was the Challenge Mode, which basically upended our ideal damage output and demanded we just be better.
Looking toward the future, we’ve got some ideas of how we can improve. We might not be able to compete with the top 1% of players, like Clan Elysium who have now scored a hat trick of back-to-back wins, but we can at least improve our time. So it’s time to start thinking about the next Day One raid when Lightfall drops next year.
