You kidding me? There's going to be a Killer Klowns From Outer Space game? Not guest stars? A full-on game dedicated to the Killer Klowns? Yes, it's true. That happened at Gamescom 2022 Opening Night Live. I'm still floored, but if that movie gets a full-on video game, I've got some opinions on what comes next. Without further ado, here are the horror franchises I want to see turned into asymmetrical PVP games.
C.H.U.D.
We're kicking it off with the anti-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. C.H.U.D. stands for Cannabalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers. Simply put, these creatures are gooey rat-faced abominations that drag folks into the sewers and eat them alive. C.H.U.D. is a cult classic that has been referenced throughout a lot of pop culture, plus it's just fun to say. I think it'd be fairly easy to adapt this into a survivor vs C.H.U.D. scenario.
Tremors
Next up is one of the movies that you probably remember Kevin Bacon best from if not Footloose. Tremors is iconic and the nature of it is very fun. Imagine having to play as the Tremor and using visual sonar to track your above-ground victims. Meanwhile, the humans have to stay off the dirt by any means necessary as the worm feels out and destroys buildings, rocks, and other obstacles between it and the humans. Kind of a "Floor is Lava" scenario except the lava is a 15-foot long mutant worm with biting mouth tentacles. Even more fun would be if you hold out long enough to get to Burt Gummer's stash of high-powered weaponry.
Gremlins
Stripe is already getting some love in MultiVersus, but I say we go the whole nine yards and make a full Gremlins video game. This game can play out in two stages: pre-transformation and post-transformation. Simply put, if the humans can stop the Mogwai from transforming into Gremlins they can end the game early. If not, well... Then you've got Stripe and a bunch of other nasty Santa-slaying creatures to deal with and the hunt is reversed.
Critters
One of the main differences between Critters and other monsters is how smart they are. They know to cut power, sabotage cars, and will eat nearly anything. They're such a danger that they require bounty hunters chase them down. This could be a three-way dance with the Critters killing to gain strength and gathering parts for their spaceship, humans trying to survive being preyed on by the Critters, and the bounty hunters seeking to kill the Critters before they can escape the planet with full bellies.
Mimic
Now here's something I haven't seen these asymmetrical horror PVP games do yet: What if the monster could imitate the surviving players, blend in among them? What if its whole strategy depended on tricking humans to get close or isolate themselves before it attacked? Meanwhile, the humans have to try to find the eggs and destroy them or kill the single male of the colony. Guillermo Del Toro's Mimic is the stuff of nightmares for a lot of reasons, but I would also love to see what kind of mechanics you could make out of a foe that could make you question whether you were walking up on a friendly or a monster at any given time.
Those are my picks for asymmetrical horror PVP. Don't get me wrong, I'm happy Killer Klowns is getting a game. I will play it, but dang, I guess we can just make an asymmetrical horror PVP out of any ol' franchise now. Why not these? Tell me, though, what horror franchise would you like to see given the game treatment? Shout out in the comments below.
