Greetings, Shack!
Last week, I launched the first installment of Bet on Black: How Microsoft and Xbox Changed Pop Culture, my newest long read for Shacknews. I needed extra time to tidy up formatting issues and build an epub and PDF of the book. Now that that's finished, I'm pleased to announce that Mercury subscribers can download a .zip containing the book in both formats.
If you haven't taken advantage of this Mercury perk yet, here's how to grab your free books:
- On the Shack's front page, click the "Long Reads" button next to Latest Stories on the left.
- Click Bet on Black: How Microsoft and Xbox Changed Pop Culture, Part 1.
- After the title page loads, you'll notice three buttons. Click Download to nab the .zip file.
You can now read Bet on Black on your computer, smartphone, and/or tablet of your choice!
As a reminder, Mercury is Shacknews' subscription service that offers perks to subscribers. While anyone can read our long reads on the website, subscribing to Mercury for as little as $1 per month entitles you to digital copies. Besides Bet on Black, long reads that currently offer digital files include:
- Rocket Jump: Quake and the Golden Age of First-Person Shooters
- Beneath a Starless Sky: Pillars of Eternity and the Infinity Engine Era of RPGs
- Better Together: Stories of EverQuest
- From Chaos: The Aspirational Storytelling of Life is Strange
- Icon of Sin: Doom and the Making of John Romero's Sigil
- Hell Razer: The Making of Doom Eternal
(You'll be able to download digital copies of Ascendant: The Rise and Fall of Tomb Raider and Lara Croft, Terraform: The Making of Doom 64, Work From Quarantine: How COVID-19 Has Upended Game Development, and Stairway to Badass: The Making and Remaking of Doom soon.)
As always, thank you for supporting my work, and for supporting Shacknews.
Happy reading!
