Our Values Need to Change for Future Generations to Have a Chance

Seriously tired & disappointed that 73 million people supported a horrible human being for the sake of Guns and “the economy”

You’ve read about my Dad, he’s pretty much as right as they get. Pro-Life, Pro-Gun, Religion (even though he hasn’t gone to church in years). It’s been crushing watching him think that Trump is the greatest president since Ronald Raegan. I thought I understood it for a time, I mean, after the Gas crisis, the economy was super good to a lot of people under Ronald’s leadership, but this led to me realizes the huge flaw in our system of Capitalism.

The crude goal in our system in to amass as much wealth as you possibly can and then die. Now, I get that the system is a lot more complicated than that, I do. This is just a really primitive breakdown of it. This is what I noticed not only with Trump, but with the pandemic. The system is tremendously flawed. Our own Governors and Leadership in our country, would rather kill citizens to keep the economy going than protect its people. They’d rather give out one 1,200-dollar stimulus check and call it quits. I know a lot of people that voted for Trump. One guy, I wouldn’t really call him a “friend” voted for Trump for two main reasons. The first was that he hates immigrants, and doesn’t want to pay taxes for their unemployment, or healthcare. The second and I kid you not, was he got a bigger tax break on his paycheck. “I was getting an extra 400/month with his new deduction changes.” He sold his Morals, ethics and decency for an extra 400 dollars a month. My Dad, also claimed he made more money during Trump’s presidency due to the Tax/Corporation breaks. For an older generation that constantly screamed during Obama’s presidency “All you millennials want is free stuff!” seems kind of hypocritical. Yes, my generation realizes that Healthcare and Education should be staples in our country and that both of those have skyrocket out of control, leaving many people in debt for trying to better themselves or going bankrupt paying for cancer treatments. I’ve heard a lot of mix reasons why people supported and voted for Trump, but it all boiled down to money in the end.

Has our country gone so bad that we’d sell each other out for a cash prize? There has to be more to live and work for, like the economics in Star Trek TNG. We are destroying our planet for profits, selling our humanity and compassion for a quick buck at the expense, of literally anyone else. I understand that life can be easier and more comfortable with money, but we’re reaching the state of no return. There has to be more to life than money, but this country and how people act make me think otherwise. Greed will destroy everything. We have to be better. I leave you with this meme. If you did support Donald Trump, shame on you for selling your values, empathy and compassion for a quick buck.

Yeah, one of these days I'm going to have a frank conversation with my father over similar bullshit and what happens after that is going to be very interesting indeed.

I agree with all this, but when I think about it I just get angry and stressed. I've tried arguing with friends and making logical points (I thought they were logical anyway) and their love of money and irrational hatred of anyone different from them is just too much.

Also, I did lose a friend because of all this. He got in an argument with one of my great friends (who happens to be black) and the stuff he said made me just stop talking to him all together. Some things are more important than the fact that I knew him for 30 years.

But the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches and the desires for other things enter in and choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.

It's just the capitalist system imploding while the workers are exploited. Definitely time for a change.

Pretty sure this article/rant didn't change anyone's values for future generations.

Instead of extending a hand, it just points a finger.

No nuance, no discussion, just "I am right, and you are immoral and wrong."

I get that Shacknews chatty is often not the place for a nuanced discussion of issues, and it's easier to just get a "rah-rah" from people who agree with you. But I for one, enjoy a bit of back and forth, even if I don't agree with a side.

      Good writeup.

The more aware I’ve become of the big issues in the world, the more it all comes in to focus as all being side effects of runaway capitalism. Like, the golden rule of “amass and protect your personal wealth” is at the core of nearly every major issue we’re facing.

I find it really horrible to think about because there are no quick ways out of this

It's impressive that such a highly religious country (among other western nations) is so especially selfish by comparison given the supposed teachings of those religions.

I read it and then got to the Economic Uncertainty part again. Remember that falsehood from 2016 which has been repeatedly disproven by the very people seeking to prove it?
Your own example's #1 reason was "hates immigrants".
      This is not economically based.
Do you know what it is? What thing they discovered anew with every set of interviews and human interest story?
      They hate brown people.
      End of story.

I'm really really disappointed this is where you went after my last three days crying in the political thread.

You are right and you are wrong (IMO). Yes, values would need to change. But they could change back to what they were at the founding of American (which worked well) instead of changing to something that has been tried (and failed) in Europe.

Your view of capitalism is underdeveloped. Capitalism is not about gaining wealth at the cost of everything else. It's about freedom to choose by individuals and not the state/king. Yes, it can lead to uncontrolled greed for wealth. So can socialism (see Stalin, Chavez...pretty much every Communist ruler). So could feudalism. We haven't developed a system where people haven't found a way to amass wealth of some sort. In America, religion (specifically Christianity) was meant to be a check on this, as Christianity espouses charity and talks about the love of money ruining somebody (but not money itself). You see this all over the Founding Fathers writing - they were designing a system for a moral and religious people and they openly stated that it would not be valid if the people were not so. Now, the people are increasingly not so, and so the system is not working well.

(Speculation on your dad) Your father, to put it bluntly, lacks depth of values. He espouses things that he doesn't actually know much about. He says he's pro religion but hasn't darkened a door of a church. I'd wager he doesn't actually know much about why capitalism is good, or why Christianity is good, or why we need the 2A. IMO, that's the problem. It's not Left leaning people, it's the lack of knowledge and education from the Right and/or religious people. As a right leaning Christian person, I see this all the time. We don't get this education in school, or even church now, and though there are things like PragerU that are trying to educate the masses, it's an uphill battle.

So, and here's my little pitch, consider the possibility that your father is not a good indicator of where are values need to be.

You mean worked well for white Christian men liked you while women couldn't vote, black people were enslaved, and LGBTQ people lived in fear?

Ah yes, we all remember how the founders very clearly stated that Christianity was the official religion of the United States and an important check on government systems to prevent abuses.

Your understanding of the past is garbage and the values that flow from it reflect that.
