Shining Force 2 is the one that gets me into Switch Online + Expansion Pass

Nintendo and Sega are going right after my heart with the latest additions to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass.

I have, up to this point, been mostly dismissive of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass. It's got some neat things, but there was very little in there that actually caught my interest, especially at the price it's offered. That said, it looks like Nintendo finally got the one that will crack my wallet and get my interest. They added Shining Force 2 to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass, one of my top 10 all-time favorite games.

For those who don't know, Shining Force 2 is a gem of the Sega Genesis era. It's a fantasy-fiction turn-based strategy RPG. If you're thinking, "like Fire Emblem?" you're not far off. It was kind of Sega's answer to Fire Emblem. I loved the first game because not only does it feature a cool cast of varied characters each featuring their own narrative, but it also features a lot of classes which which to vary up your army composition. It captured my heart in terms of a game that unlocked my imagination, but also pushed me to think and strategize as to how to beat the game's various battles.

One of Shining Force's coolest features is that your characters and foes battle it out in stylized battle screens.

Shining Force 2 is a big fat excellent improvement upon everything in the original Shining Force. It features a whole new cast, new spells, classes, monsters, and the like, plus it has perhaps one of my favorite retro gaming soundtracks of all time. Between battle and the stories that play out inbetween, it's just plain excellent.

With that in mind, I would be remiss if I didn't call this game in particular out when it comes to the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass. There's been a lot of interesting stuff, including the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe expansion, N64 games like Star Fox 64, and other cool things. I continue to hope the Expansion Pass grows with further cool content to make the subscription price worth my while, but for now, this? Shining Force 2? That's a heck of an add-on and I just might have to stop sitting on the fence about it.

Shining Force 2 has a ton of fun and charming characters, such as Slade the Thief. He is a rat friend - a friend who is also a rat.

What do you think? Has anything particularly caught your eye since the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass launched? Is there anything like Shining Force 2 is for me where if they added it, it would get your money? Let me know in the comments! In the meantime, I need to go back and have another looksy at squad comps and character tier lists for battle in Shining Force 2!

You know, you could download the Sega Genesis Collection for $15 on sale and own it without having to pay the premium per year to play it.

I would buy it on one of those then feel guilt-free playing the ROM in an open source emulator that would probably be much more accurate than anything "official" from Sega

Yeah, you can copy the roms from this to use in whatever emulator you want.

That's exactly what I did. I'll buy the Shining Force stuff whenever it releases to support the franchise, but I'm always going to be playing them via emulation rather than the offical packages. It's a shame, because I'd LOVE to play this stuff on Switch, but fuck them if they think I'm playing a subscription.

That said, I'd probably do it if they released the Shining Force 3 trilogy in English on the Switch. I can't believe Sega hasn't been milking that cow over the years. It's also not like they don't have the resources or connections to have a small team build a new version of it with the original assets or support and license the English fan translations (much like what XSEED had been doing).

Yeah, square has been doing the bare minimum with most of their classic JRPG re-releases and they still sell well.

A Shining Force and/or Phantasy Star pixel remaster series would probably sell really well.

M2's Switch port of Phantasy Star was so fucking great that it's a crime they didn't get to do any of the subsequent games

Well, it’s not like I’m not interested in the other stuff in the Expansion Pass. I would play the Kart tracks and Star Fox 64. Stuff like this just makes the whole bundle more appealing to me where it didn’t really appeal to me enough to drop the dough before.

That and this post is more about how Shining Force 2 is freaking excellent more than anything. Happy to see it in another accessible place.
