Dark Souls 2

Dark Souls 2

I recently began a first-time playthrough of the Souls series, after years of failed attempts to get into these games. After finishing DS1 Remastered and Bloodborne, I have now finished DS2.  I've read a lot of comments about how this game is people's least favorite Souls entry, so I was interested to see how much I would like or dislike it.

RuinedHJ

I just finished Dark Souls 2 the other day and I fucking loved every second of it. A few things were initial turn-offs for me, but almost all of them were eventually mitigated in one way or another, or they ended up not being as big of a deal as I thought they would be. For instance:

  • The fact that you can be invaded even while hollow - When this first happened, it was a major wtf, and it made me extremely nervous, but it didn't end up happening very often, and most people who did it usually waited until I was done doing whatever it was I was up to before dueling me (and probably remotely executing code on my system).
  • Progressively losing health each time you die, up until 50%, and looking like a rancid, festering piece of shit as you decay - This sucked initially, but eventually the item needed to reverse hollowing became more frequent, and you get rings to limit the health loss to 25% (and even a ring to make you still look human)
  • Needing to port back to the main hub to level, instead of being able to do it any bonfire - This never got better, but I was already used to it from Bloodborne, and at least the load times were faster.

Areas/Levels

I read a few complaints online about the lack of cohesion between area themes, but that never really bothered me. While many of the areas were a bit lackluster, there were some incredible standouts for me.

Majula -  I love the dreary majesty of it all--it feels like a cloudbreak in an otherwise near endless sea of gloom. It's a respite from the oppressive themes in other areas, and it's easily one of my overall favorite areas in the series I've visited so far.

Dragon Aerie - Holy shit. I felt like I accidentally warped onto the cover of some AD&D 2e supplementary rulebook. This is one of the best areas I've seen in a game. My only complaint is that it is criminally short.

Drangelic Castle - Standing at the foot of that winding path leading up to the castle was pure Castlevania. I felt like Simon Belmont, right up to the point where two heavily armored mammoths romanced me with their girthy tusks.

What really struck me was the sheer volume of levels. I know quantity is not necessarily as important as quality, but one of my favorite parts of the series so far has been exploration, and this game has a massive amount of new areas to journey through and ferret out secrets in. As soon as I finished the main game, I was excited to see that I did not automatically roll over into NG+, so I began backtracking and exploring areas that I did not spend a lot of time in earlier in the game.

I'm done with the main game now and before I even begin the DLC I still feel like I have a ton to do. Here's a little sample of what I've been doing, just to keep myself in the world and not end the experience yet:

  • Figured out how to open the locked door in Majula
  • Leveled up my faith & intelligence so that I can use the sacred chime hammer
  • Traveled back to Pharros to farm lockstones & unlock the rest of the doors
  • Sought out all the keys necessary to access DLC areas
  • Sought out remaining optional bosses I unknowingly skipped
  • Talked to any merchants I had missed to get them to appear in the Majula hub

While I can understand why people may be turned off by some of the more punitive systems in this game, and by the sort of haphazard menagerie of levels, I was absolutely obsessed with this game. It feels like DS1 blown out on a bigger scale, with more of everything. I haven't even touched on the bosses, lore or many new systems either. This just feels like a world I can live in for a really long time, and I'm not even in the DLC yet. Well, other than a little peek...

Pros

Massive amount of levels with secrets everywhere. Tons of content too

Wonderful replayability due to NG+ and easy respec system

Tons of different weapons, builds, and playstyles to experiment with

Players are not automatically dumped into NG+, allowing you to leisurely explore and experiment after beating the main game

Visually stunning level design at times

Great lore--especially regarding the king and the game's ending

Cons

Level themes vary wildly and their order doesn't always make sense

You can be invaded even when you're hollow, which can significantly raise your stress level while playing

You lose health when you repeatedly die. Your character also becomes progressively more visually decayed as you die, which can turn some people off

You can only level up in the main hub

I get bummed out when I read about some cheesy shit you can pull in a walkthrough or guide, and then it says it was patched out in SoFs :(

The DLC is great too for the most part. I spent a lot of time playing SotFS, and so far haven't been as enthused about my DS3 playthrough.

Nice write-up. I think each DS game is unique and awesome in their own ways whole still firmly being DS games. Dark Souls II is fantastic, tons of weapon and environment and enemy variety, even if the environments were a little disparate from each other there were still plenty of great sections. And the DLC is really fantastic.

1 is probably the most "Dark Souls" Dark Souls and 3 is kind of a mix of Bloodborne and Dark Souls. They're all very special games.

I remember around when DS2 came out some people (including me) were a little nervous that they might have made the game easier. Hah, definitely not the case, and even if you found the base game easy, the DLC is proper hardcore in some spots.

Great read. I agree with all of it. I liked dark souls 2 a good bit. I beat every boss by the time I hung it up. If you need a coop buddy in the dlc Hollar, a few areas were made for coop.

The 2nd DLC, Brume Tower, is the single best DLC in the series, shoving Artorias Of The Abyss rudely to the side.

Dark Souls 2 is criminally under-rated. It's a good fucking game, loaded with memorable content. I loved the use of torches to gradually light up the dark world. And Majula is a truly special hub, as you point out. Go do the DLC!

Majula I think is best hub. Music and graphics rock.

I took the time last night to burn an ascetic at the last boss fight so that I could fight Aldia (because I did not kill the king the first time I finished the game). I had to fight my way through the guardian and follower again, and then Nashandra at NG+ strength, which was a bit of a pain, but I finally did it. I was bummed that there wasn’t any reward of achievement for killing Aldia, but I did end up earning about 250k souls from the two fights I had to redo.

I love the ascetic burning mechanic to get areas up to ng+ or higher strength without restarting the whole game in ng+. I have a bunch of things I want to do in the world (including the DLC) before I move on. I accidentally beat Bloodborne before starting the DLC and it took my awhile to get back to that point. Also, the Bloodborne DLC which I’ve barely started, kicked my ass, so I’m sad I will have to play it at NG+ strength for my first play through.

there is something about the feeling of movement and the attack animations just feel OFF to me. don't get me wrong, a bad FROM game is still a good game, but it's definitely the weakest of all of their games for me, and as good as it is it just doesn't 'feel' like Dark Souls to me

DS3 feels more like DS1 than DS2 did for me, and again I think it has to do with the feel of combat and movement. Maybe it''s the ADP stat? or the hidden Agility stat? Maybe it's something to do with the camera? I'm not sure.

I still put over 100 hours into it and replayed it a bunch like all of the FROM games, it's just not my favorite and one I never need to go back to. Some of the bosses are FROM series highlights, but the game overall feels like the weakest link

It's Adaptability/Agility, yeah. You have, HAVE to get ADP around 20-ish, and AGI STARTS feeling good around 96. I like 100-102.
