Give me your home security recommendations

Security cameras and alarm systems. A complex series of biometric checks and ID tags. Or a big log that swings down from the ceiling. All recommendations are welcome.

Keeping your shit secure is important. Not only is this a good rule of thumb when moving valuable items in a ute, it’s also a good thing to consider for your house. Deadbolts on doors, locks and keys, and security screens are excellent, but I’m thinking of investing in some security cameras and I would love your thoughts and opinions on the matter.

Part of my reasoning behind this is obviously the sense of security that comes from having devices set up to record the outside (and inside) of your property, but also how great it is to check on deliveries and pets. The number of times I’ve walked to my front door only to discover it was a doorknocker asking me to hand over my money to the Definitely Not A Scam Foundation is too damn high. I’d much rather take a look at my smart phone and see what’s out the front of my house (and maybe even have the ability to yell at someone through my phone when they’re out the front, like some kind of sci-fi tin can and string setup).

I’ve heard of things like Ring, specifically the doorbell and camera combo. But I’ve also seen Google’s Nest devices and a myriad of other security systems offered by dozens of other tech companies. It’s all a bit overwhelming and each one seems similar to the next, but also slightly different.

Then there’s the problem of working out whether I need to power the devices and whether it’s easy to mount or if some intense drilling is required. Should it have a built-in storage device like an SSD or is a memory card sufficient? Then there’s the problem of camera resolution and whether it functions well in low-light or stormy weather.

Perhaps there are also security options other than cameras that I don’t know about. As I mentioned in the Chatty element, sitting in a chair with a shotgun pointed at the front door is no longer a viable option. I don’t think that a series of tripwires tied around triggers will work either. Maybe I could balance beer bottles on doorknobs and set up a string of cans around the perimeter?

At the end of the day, I’d love to have something that’s easy enough to set up, offers good functionality, and ultimately keeps me and my family feeling safe. Give me your knowledge!

I can only sit in a rocking chair, in a corner, with a shotgun resting on my knee each night for so long before I eventually need some proper rest. In order to replace this peak security system, I want to hear what sort of security setup you have or would like to have! I’m talking cameras, alarms, etc. Give me those recommendations!

I always read that home security systems are just a scam and hard to cancel when you want out.

Just print out yourself some fancy looking home security system signs for your lawn and it'll accomplish the same deterrent that actuals systems do. Cause that's all they are - a deterrent. If someone wants to rob your place specifically then they'll probably find a way to get in, or just get out quick enough to avoid the popo.

I just set up a Wyze system with 13 window sensors, 2 doors, 2 cameras and a motion detector. Was pretty cheap (~$150 + $5/mo for monitoring) and seems acceptable for a low end system. Not fancy but can check stuff from your phone.

Not sure fancy is actually safer tbh - this was mostly for convenience.

That Wyze setup looks great, very affordable. Traditional security systems are such a rip.
