Don’t Breathe 2 review

Don’t Breathe 2 review

Finally! They did it! They made a sequel! But is it good?

When Don’t Breathe released in 2016, I was over the moon with excitement. It was one of my favorite movies of the year, and I couldn’t wait for the next chapter in that story. Five years later, we finally get Don’t Breathe 2, and it’s far from what I expected. That said, it’s still very much an enjoyable film and a worthwhile follow-up to the first movie.

Don’t Breathe 2 turns the tables a bit and puts Stephen Lang’s Norman Nordstrom in the spotlight. Following the events of the first movie, Don’t Breathe 2 follows a new story, with Nordstrom raising a young girl as his daughter. Of course, this will raise at least a few concerns for those that remember the original film. Sh*t hits the fan when some dudes that are up to no good invade Norman’s house, looking to take the girl.

One of the best aspects of 2016’s Don’t Breathe was the shocking twists, the moments that made you lean forward in your seat and say “no f****** way.” I was impressed that Don’t Breathe 2 is able to pull off a few of these moments, too. The trailers seemed to have given a lot away, but there’s plenty of surprises saved for the full movie. The story pretty much goes in the exact opposite direction of what I was expecting after the first movie, but it’s an interesting story that's worth telling.

Watching the trailers, I was concerned that the filmmakers were going to make Nordstrom the hero, that they would try to convince us to root for him after the unforgivable things we learn about him in the first movie. Thankfully, Don’t Breathe 2 doesn’t skirt around his horrible past, and the movie plays on themes of consequences and how our actions will eventually catch up to us.

Another thing is that I found Don’t Breathe to be a bit less scary than the first movie. Don’t Breathe (2016) is a true edge-of-your seat thriller. The sequel still has several incredibly tense moments, but sometimes it felt more like a slasher or action flick. Not that that’s a bad thing.

It’s hard to really dig into the bones of Don’t Breathe 2 and discuss my thoughts at length without getting into spoilers, so I think I’m going to leave it there. If you dug the first movie, I think you’ll be pretty satisfied with what we get in Don’t Breathe 2.

When I saw Spiral it was just one other person in the theatre so I felt safe (it was a white dude though so he sat behind me and touched the back of my neck)

Could I watch this movie without seeing the first, or would it not make any sense?

Not OP so semi-educated guess here but the first movie will set the standard as to how you are supposed to feel about the main character.

I would STRONGLY implore you to DON'T watch the trailer for the first movie, it totally spoils some HUGE sh*t :(

Also the first movie is great so why not watch it first if you have a way and are interested in this???!?

Up in the frozen North (🍁), Don't Breathe is on Netflix, which I shell out a fistful of CanuckBucks™ for each month. So, yeah I just might give that one a try.

Dognose is correct! You technically don't NEEEED to see the first movie, but I think it gives some good context to the main character. It's also just one of the better thrillers of the last decade, so you should watch it anyway if you can haha

Oh man, I forgot to ever to do a review for that one! I'm not sure if I'll get around to writing about that one on here anytime soon, but I will tell you that I liked it! I put it slightly below the first movie, but the second one is essentially more of what I dug about the original. They do some interesting world-building and there's actually a twist or two that I wasn't expecting. They do some hard sequel-baiting towards the end, but I don't know if those box office numbers will warrant a 3rd movie.

Thank you very much, did you see Spiral and if so did you watch the Saw movies? I am still trying to decide how I feel about it

I reeeeeaaallllyy did not like Spiral at all, if I'm being truthful. I really dig the first Saw and think it's a very creative horror film. The sequels go off the deep end but there's some value in them. Spiral was just bizarre and bad on so many levels for me. Chris Rock seemed like he was in a different movie. There was a weird sepia filter over the entire movie, and its story was kinda goofy

Had a reply worked up but here is Pharaoh review https://www.shacknews.com/cortex/article/624/escape-room-movie-review which says it a lot better. It is spoilers though so the takeaway is it is Saw Lite™, they crossed Saw 1 with Cube/the escape room fad and made it PG-13, and I enjoyed it about as much as is possible with that in mind. Better than a PG-13 horror usually is, only worth your time if you have nothing better. For PG-13 horror, Happy Death Day is much much much more worth your time
