Armor sets in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be your primary defense against enemies. Unlike shields, armor never breaks and the bonuses it bestows upon you are permanent. You also have the ability to upgrade armor, which will increase its defensive rating and add effects and status boosts that will help you tremendously and cut down on your dependence on elixirs and food items. Some armor in Zelda: Breath of the Wild doesn't belong to a set. You can wear this armor with any other armor without losing the effectiveness of its particular bonuses. The drawback to this is that some individual pieces of armor, when worn, will prevent you from equiping a piece of an armor set, making it to where you don't get the bonus from wearing the full set.
