Chattycast 79: Let's Role-Play
The crew discusses the current state of traditional RPGs and their popularity during the slower, non-blockbuster months. Come watch!
If the end of the year belongs to big-budget spectacle, the beginning of it tends to be the place for smaller projects. As a result, the once massive RPG genre has been largely pushed into the first half of the year, and on top of that, mostly appears on handhelds. Meanwhile, RPG mechanics and progression hooks have been incorporated into everything from Call of Duty to puzzle games.
This week, the Chattycast talks about the current state of RPGs. Is they heyday of the traditional RPG over, in favor of more action-oriented award-winners like The Witcher 3? Is it still viable to make an old-school RPG in today's market? Do the retro throwbacks that accelerate progression like Bravely Default expose a weakness in that style of game, or are we just getting too impatient?
