AMD 64bit CPU Conference

11
JC's PC News has a transcript of AMD's 2000 conference call, mainly focusing on the introduction of AMD's 64 bit tech (the general Q2 2000 transcript is here). It has several questions from investors and web sites, who ask about the position of the Hammer, SSE instructions, performance, Intel's 64bit CPU Itanium and several others topics.

Q: Do you expect, then, to be able to go head-to-head with the Itanium?
A: Absolutely. I think 10 years ago, 15 years ago, nobody thought that x86 would go head-to-head with the RISC processors -- with the Alpha, with the Sparc, with the MIPS processors. And what we've discovered over the last 10 years, is that absolutely not only do they provide the value of compatibility, but they provide today, the absolute highest performance across the board, whether that be desktop or server applications. RISC may have seemed like a better idea than x86; in the end it turned out to be not that at all. I think the same thing will come to pass with x86-64 and the Itanium architecture.
