Destiny Diary #4: The Littlest Guardian

The Destiny Diaries are preparing for the finale, but first we take a little time to grind out levels using Vita's Remote Play.

I'm preparing for the end-game on Mars, but more than anything I just want to go back and finish all the older missions. By the time I reach the finale, I want to be overpowered.

I'm now at level 17, still progressing fairly quickly as long as I keep up with missions that are roughly on-level, and the combat is really coming into its own. It was always well-made and polished, but like any game with RPG elements, half the fun is in the later stages when your powers and abilities start to stack on themselves to make you a wrecking machine.

My Warlock is best-suited for large groups of enemies and crowd control. I'm not very attuned to precision damage against one target--making Strike Zones a bit of a struggle still--but give me a field full of scrubs and I am become death, destroyer of worlds.

I only just realized that I could switch to the Sunsinger subclass at any time, which made me feel pretty foolish. Still, as someone who usually goes it alone and only groups up when going to a Strike Zone or hanging out with friends, I probably wouldn't have bothered with it anyway. I have to wonder how useful a support class like Sunsinger would be for solo missions.

To the extent that I want to spend time hitting the level cap, at least I won't have to hog the TV. I tried the Vita remote play last night, and I was very impressed with the results.

The latency was almost imperceptible, and it ran with a nice crisp image that looked beautiful on the Vita's OLED screen. The controls took a little more getting used to. Sprinting is accomplished by pressing down on the control pad while moving with the stick, while the grenade, Ghost, and melee attack are mapped to the left, center, and right side of the touch screen, respectively. That may sound awkward, but that's only because it is.

I wasn't able to move quite as fluidly as I can using a DualShock 4, and the reload button (Square) is so close to the touch screen that I would often trigger my melee by accident. Those issues make it less-than-ideal for more difficult missions, and it would be an absolute nightmare for Strike Zones. But finishing some lower-level missions while a football game is on made the trade-off worth it.

All that's left is to decide what to watch while I fight my way to level 20.
