You should've seen this coming. With thousands of people trying to set up their newly-purchased PS4s, PlayStation Network is struggling with "extremely high volume," according to Sony. As a result, you may experience some issues when trying to connect online.

"Some gamers may experience some difficulty connecting to the network or downloading content. We are actively working to resolve the issue. We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience," PlayStation says on its support page. You may want to keep that bookmarked to see future updates.

Hopefully, you followed our advice and downloaded that day-one update in advance.

*shrug* I use it out of habit these days ... I don't even mean anything derogatory by it.

And I am not a Sony fanboy ... I am getting the XBone next Friday.

And I prefer Windows over any other OS, and detest everything about Apple :)

I thought Live couldn't even handle Halo 3?

I don't think the Xbox One will be selling > 3 million units day 1 so Halo 3's launch would actually be a larger load on Live than the Xbox One in terms of users

Last I heard, Live has 300 000 servers. Where the previous system only had like 15 000?

I dunno, they seem to have some pretty hardcore infrastructure in place. Then again, this will probably be the biggest number of people they've had simultaneously on the servers in years.

Didn't the Azure network, like ALL of it, crash a couple weeks ago?

I do think Live will be head and shoulders above Sony's network, but nothing's perfect.

there was an outage a couple weeks ago but it appears to have only been affecting deploying new services from staging to production, not already running production services. In February there was an outage that affected Xbox Music and Video for ~5-6 hours.

The Register called it "The Blue Sky of Death". It wasn't really all that bad unless you were trying to deploy a new service to the platform, but I laughed at the name nonetheless.

It was a bad thing for certain -- but when put into context it was largely a non issue for most people. Makes for some great doom and gloom headlines but that was about it.

Live won't crash cuz no one is getting an Xbox One.

        Am I doing this right?

I think we'll be fine. I know on my side that I'm overscaled by a factor of at least 3x at the moment just to be extra certain. Even if something goes wrong or the traffic prediction models are off, I can scale additional capacity in less then 10 minutes. I wouldn't be surprised if everyone else was the same.

I can assure you that everyone else is not the same.

However, if anyone could do this right it would MS. They've gotten pretty good over the last few years with managing Live.

He's talking about MS when he says everyone not other companies. He's just in a different division than the Live group.

      My day 1 impressions!

Unboxing was quick and uneventful. Slightly disappointed at the lack of included audio cables, but for now HDMI and TV sound will suffice. Turned on system and had no problems setting up wifi and other basic settings. The new controller is very comfy, and the pads definitely feel good/tight... the big touchscreen/button is a bit odd but that doesn't bother me, and the options/share buttons are a little weirdly placed but again no biggie.

I got the day one update yesterday onto my PC as per your advice, but I decided to see how fast updating through the menus would be. This was about 6-7 hours ago, so maybe server load was lower then, but it took 5-10 minutes to download the update, and another 5-10 to install it. Overall that was a very smooth and simple experience.

I still haven't bought any games... so far I've played Warframe for about 45 minutes (semi-fun, free to play) and Blacklight Retribution for about 5 minutes (again free to play, and I played practice mode, didn't like it much). I played the FIFA demo the most, for maybe an hour and a half, and it's good, but didn't sell me. I'm fairly disappointed with the launch lineup (or at least, the several games I've looked into so far).

What I liked a lot is the Twitch/Ustream integration, so that I could watch people play the other games straight from the menus. Once the stream gets to high res (usually within 10 seconds), it's very good in video quality and generally enough to tell me whether or not I'd like to buy a game. Buying a game through the interface seems really straightforward as well (there's a button on the UI to start the game, and if you don't have the game, it prompts you to buy it). I do have two complaints about the whole streaming thing... it should let you pick streams by choosing a game (though you can search), and more importantly, I wish you could choose separate volumes for caster voice vs game sounds, and disable/hide the live comments. Both minor problems though, overall it's a great idea and I think it'll get people to buy more games.

Anyway, I still have one more F2P game to try (DC Universe), though I have a feeling it'll be something I'll play for a couple of hours max. Mostly I'm looking forward to great indie games and interesting non-shooters (since I prefer shooters on PC). The Witness, Watch Dogs and Uncharted are probably at the top of my to-watch-for list right now. That said, the first two might be better on PC, so we'll see what the reviews say.

Overall, it seems like a solid new system, but much like all new consoles, the launch games are meh. I mostly don't mind because it's relatively cheap, so I guess I'll be patient about the games (and will see more reviews for the launch games too as they get written). If you haven't bought one yet, I'd wait till there's a must-have game. So far, IMO, there isn't one.
