PlayStation Network will now let you add up to 2000 friends, a significant boost from its original limit of 100. The functionality is already available on Vita and will be ready on PS4 at launch.
While you can add up to 1000 friends on Vita, that functionality won't expand to PS3. The PlayStation official forums (via Joystiq) explain that "if you build a friend list bigger than 100 on PS4/Vita, network servers will automatically filter your friend's list when you play on a PS3 system. Additionally, you will be able to set and lock a pre-determined friends list to be used while you play on the PS3 system if you wish."
Apparently the ability to display all your friends in applications and games is "planned," but obviously some games will be limited to the original 100 friend limit.

Yeah, I asked about this earlier and no one replied, so I'm assuming no one has heard anything about this on either new console. Seems like a simple enough feature :(

BTW, since these are merged lists with PS3 accounts, for most PS3 games they will be limited to showing 100 users if you're playing on a PS3. You can select a list of favorites to -always- show up in that 100 list, or let Playstation manage it (it'll prioritized logged in and gaming people over others), but you can manually control it all you need.

I dare say he was suggesting that most people do *not* get a useful service out of it and only acquiesce to installing it because some games cannot be purchased on PC otherwise.

But of they do get games they want, is that not useful?
Its not like you have to run the client 24/7 if you're not playing origin games. And even when running, its not a big resource hog.
I get that people have personal preferences, but at this point, surely its not beyond the realms of belief that people happily use it voluntarily?
