Next Resident Evil will 'likely' be more horror-oriented, says Capcom
Capcom promises to make its next Resident Evil more horror-based, citing the success of The Last of Us and Tomb Raider as inspiration.
We didn't like Resident Evil 6. And neither did a lot of fans. The critical reception was not good--but crucially, fan reaction was quite negative as well.
Ultimately, what was Capcom's most ambitious, most designed-for-the-mainstream Resident Evil game ended up selling fewer copies than Capcom would've liked. And money talks.
"We have obviously seen the consumer response and the PR response," former Capcom marketing boss Michael Pattison told MCV. "With Resident Evil 6 specifically, we probably put too much content in there, there were comments from consumers that said it felt bloated," Pattison said, echoing comments made by Capcom that the game wasn't focused enough. "There was a cry out for us to focus our attention on survival horror, rather than be too many things to all people. You'll find where we go next will likely be more targeted at our core fanbase," he added.
The recent success of survival horror-inspired action games like The Last of Us, and to a lesser degree, the new Tomb Raider, have Capcom going back to the drawing board. "The Last of Us shows a good direction of what the consumers want. Tomb Raider as well, we spoke to R&D and they looked at that and they enjoyed that experience. I think that proves there is still a strong market for that sort of content."

excellent. this is a good self-reflection period. less wacky voodoo dudes with fancy hats. more dredging up umbrella secret codes and crawling through experimental areas that are clinically clean on one side and blood splattered on the other. more Umbrella Corporation, less random wandering around.
nice linear co-op game, please. reboot this sucker properly. get us back into the story, since umbrella wants everyone to be pawns, we need to figure out where we're at.
also wesker needs to be in it. always. lololol -
From the original MCV article that was sourced: "A lot is said about the saturation of this zombie, post-apocalyptic survival horror. But it is still alive and well. The Last of Us shows a good direction of what the consumers want. Tomb Raider as well, we spoke to R&D and they looked at that and they enjoyed that experience. I think that proves there is still a strong market for that sort of content."
I had to laugh at that part about saturation comment because there hasn't been a real "zombie, post-apocalyptic survival horror" game from Capcom in 2 console generations. The last in my book was Resident Evil: Code Veronica.
Seems they are finally waking up to the success of The Walking Dead TV show and $500M box office gross of World War Z and the success of The Last of Us game to finally realize that there might still be something to the Zombie Survival Horror genre they abandoned after Code Veronica.
Yeah I didn't care for Resident Evil 4 and onward much. They were more action games to me than Survival Horror.
If Capcom R&D in Japan see The Last of Us as the high water mark to shoot for and not try to relive their "glory days" of Resident Evil 4 over and over and over again, then Resident Evil as a series should be in a good place with RE7.

It's kind of strange when you think about. The series which pretty much put the zombies in video games... kind of missed the largest wave of zombie mania in the history of the world... by taking zombies out of their games! They might even be too late now because a lot of people are just burnt out on zombies now!

Capcom should just put the first 55 minutes of the 10-2-2012 Bombcast on infinite loop, and hear Brad and the guys agonizing over how bad RE6 was.
The other funny part is that the creator of Resident Evil, Shinji Mikami, is working on The Evil Within, which is survival horror. For that reason, I was going to say that Capcom should just leave Resident Evil fallow for five years (they're not afraid to do that for franchises; look at Mega Man: http://www.shacknews.com/article/69329/mega-man-legends-3-titles-canceled ). -
This is great and all, but if TLOU is part of what prompted this, let's be honest: they're not going to go from RE6 to creating something on part with TLOU.
The first 15 minutes of RE6 and the first 15 minutes of TLOU were vastly different experiences for me, and I didn't even have to shoot anything for those 15 minutes of TLOU. RE6 is a disappointment and that's being *nice*.
