The Last of Us dev diary focuses on the Infected

A new video developer diary for The Last of Us goes into detail on the creation process of the Infected, while showing off some game play at the same time.

When Andrew visited Sony for his preview of The Last of Us, he got a look at the various stages of infection that Naughty Dog was using to create non-zombies. A new video developer diary goes into a bit more detail on the creation process, while showing off some game play at the same time.

The diary, entitled Hush, details how the look of infected was created, using images of diseases and fungus to get the right look and feel. It also explains a bit how the clickers use echo-location to hunt down prey, and shows how players can throw things to make sounds to distract them. It does a good job of creating the eerie feeling of dread when you hear the clicking noise.

The Last of Us is coming exclusively to PlayStation 3, but the release was recently delayed until June 14.

I really didn't want this game to have monsters in it. I was hoping that it was just a man vs environment vs man game. Sort of semi-realistic "it could happen" type thing. "The Infected" ruins the atmosphere of the kind of game I was hoping this would be.

ya video games need to mature. throwing in monsters is a game killer for me. ie: Far cry would have been a much better game had it stopped right before reaching the first monster

I agree, while I finished Far Cry, I didn't like the monsters aspect either. I also lost interest and stopped playing Uncharted when the first monsters appeared.

it's such a cheap gimmick; they dont have to explain motivation because hey it's a monster. they dont have to give it any sort of realistic animation or design because it's a monster and not based on anything in reality

Precisely so, which is why it's so disappointing with this game and especially coming from this developer. I know Naughty Dog is capable of so much more in their story telling, they just aren't showing it.

The apocalyptic end-of-the-world survival type story is very popular these days and they could have drawn on any number of sources for motivation without having to resort to monsters for the primary plot antagonist. Hell, they could have glossed over the whole apocalyptic event in the first place without any real explanation as to why everything has gone to shit (like so many other stories do) and it would have been OK with me (obviously you would want some clues there, but a detailed exploration isn't necessary).

people always shit on the crytek midgame shift. the problem with Far Cry for me was that the monsters were really poorly balanced, they were soooooooo godamn unbalanced. the big guys could take your ENTIRE ammo supply to kill and the trigens could one shot you from out of nowhere. i actually liked the Crysis shift, but i know im in the minority. i would prefer they had not so drastically changed focus, they should have still had frequent korean encounters instead of the entire paradigm shift to aliens.

I liked the Rocket Launcher monsters, but Trigen were weaksauce incarnate. I HAD to cheese them.

Same. This has moved from a day-one buy to a wait and see.

So by 'not-zombies' they mean... zombies.
