Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate coming March 19, demo in February
It's out with the old and in with the new, as Capcom today announced that the shiny revamped Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate will hit Wii U and Nintendo 3DS on March 19, but also that it plans to shut the multiplayer servers for Monster Hunter Tri on Wii down on April 30.

Capcom's announcement today revealed a demo for both platforms on February 21 too.
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate jazzes up Tri with fancier graphics, proper local multiplayer, new monsters, the ability to transfer saves between the Wii U and 3DS editions, and controls reworked for the two systems' touch-screens. As for what Monster Hunter is in general, well, it's a notoriously difficult series where you hunt monsters to turn their bodyparts into weapons and armour so you can take on bigger, tougher monsters. You're a monster hunter, see. You hunt monsters.
Capcom also confirmed that the Wii U edition will support voice chat, and a day-one update will enable text communication through a plain old USB keyboard.

That game came out before Nintendo locked down the franchise, and by all accounts, it was a step back for the series.
A Vita version would be one hell of a shot in the arm for that platform, so it's sad that it probably won't happen, but this would be a good time for an imitator to really step up to the plate and show their stuff.
God Eater on the Vita would make MH4 on the 3DS look like a trip through a time--warp.
Not to mention PSO2. Once that gets out the door, every day the Vita goes without Monster Hunter is potentially a good day to be Sega.

"Monster Hunter Tri was originally announced for the PlayStation 3 but was switched to the Wii.[3] It features new mission modes as well as new monsters and items. This information was revealed in 2007 at Nintendo's Japanese press conference."

My guess is that Nintendo went over to Capcom with a big bag of Wii profit loot and said, "hey, how about some MH love for big N". Capcom looked over at Sony and, well, Sony was too busy to get back with them.
