Battlefield 3 tournament offers $1.6 million prize
EA and Virgin Gaming have teamed up to offer a $1.6 million competition for Battlefield 3. The console-centric contest starts early next year.
How good would you say you are at console Battlefield games? If the answer is "extremely," then you either have an inflated ego or a real chance at winning a lot of money. EA announced a partnership with Virgin Gaming today, to open the Battlefield 3 Worldwide Conquest Tournament. The competition is set for early 2012 with a $1.6 million purse at stake.
You can pre-register at the Virgin Gaming site as a 360 or PS3 player. For whatever reason, it doesn't extend to the PC version. The announcement teases that the players will take a share of the large prize, so the live finale will most likely group a team of players together to split the reward.
"We're always looking to raise the bar for our members, to give them truly epic gaming experiences they won’t find anywhere else and Battlefield 3 hits the mark," said Virgin Gaming co-founder Zachary Zeldin in the announcement. "This partnership with EA and DICE is exactly the kind of relationship it takes to deliver on that goal, and we can’t be more excited to be working with them to host the greatest competitive gaming event I've ever seen."
Battlefield 3 is set to launch on PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360 on October 25, so you'll have a little time to practice and learn the maps before the competition starts next year.

I am not looking forward to it because every time I've played a game of CoD; Black Ops and someone has had a little controller next to their name on the scoreboard they've destroyed the rest of the players :(
I am however looking forward to people underestimating PS3 players and then getting their arse handed to them. :) -

i don't doubt that good console gamers can beat pc gamers, but when it comes to the best vs the best it just comes down to the limitations of the interface. And i'm sorry but the mouse and keyboard is more accurate and responsive. Of course maybe the console gamers have auto aim etc.. and all that stuff.

"For whatever reason, it doesn't extend to the PC version."
I'm guessing that is because of the utter lack of anti-cheat technology that they've developed and how easily and fast past Battlefield games got hacked out. That isn't to say consoles are completely free of it, but they most definitely have a leg up.
That aside it's quite disappointing as I believe PC gamers are quite a bit more competitive and for good reason.
I really don't think they should do tourneys like this unless people are sitting at a physical location though. That's a lot of money and a lot of foul play will follow suite. Having people sitting infront of you and being constantly watched by others most definitely yields a more competitive and more respectable environment. People are, usually, less prone to being assholes in real life (although that's starting to change here in US of A).
