Morning Discussion
Its proponents claim that "The verb 'to Gamify' means to apply game mechanics in everyday applications and situations to boost engagement, fun and good behaviors." Cynics--myself being one--might say it's slapping video game terms onto pre-existing, well-established systems of loyalty schemes and training programs, tossing in achievements and leaderboards then acting as if you've done something profound and world-changing.
Apparently, it's been predicted that gamification will be a $1 billion market by 2015. People, I have faith in the world and trust in you. Please don't let this happen.
Of course, it's all about Cowclickification now anyway.

> SHOOT TANKS
The tanks explode, opening a previously closed vent
> GO INTO THE VENT
You fall down to street level, landing on a small health pack that restores the health you lost from falling. To the north is an adult theater. There are aliens to the north and east. You hear a flying alien somewhere to the north

Dear Steve Gibson,
A release date is awesome, but we know the game's not actually finished just yet.
And when it does, please have a "GONE GOLD" announcement.
Just for old time's sake the Shack needs a proper "DNF GONE GOLD" thread. It will be the "GONE GOLD" thread to end all "GONE GOLD" threads. It will make Quake 3 look tiny in comparison.
I know games don't go "GOLD" like they used to but just this once for old time's sake, eh?
Thanks,
Schnapple -

Yeah, ass-street mentioned it also, and I'm sure there are other sequels to games that have come later, but Fallout 3 wasn't by the same team and was really more of a reboot of the series. I'm thinking more of a "direct sequel" by the same (or similar) team that at least had some form of a development plan going for 10 years or more. ateam311 was near the mark with Valve, but the only other one I can think of that comes close (that also doesn't really count IMO) is Team Fortress 2. There was TF Classic in the interim (and the original TF was just a mod anyway so...).

Indeed, and also TF1 was really just a mod anyway, so I'm not sure it counts. TF2's the only other project off the top of my head that was in some form of development for a near-decade, however I think there've been other games in the past like maybe Too Human (???) that had plans for a long time but maybe weren't in development until later... possibly things like Shenmue (not too familiar with its development but I remember there being a lot of troubles)?

I'm not completely sure, but WIRED magazine ran a story on it and he's taking preorders (has been for years). The original game looked to be a monochrome Macintosh game from the days before they even called it Mac OS.
I think it's more the real equivalent of Chinese Democracy - it's all completely contingent on one very fickle and not in a hurry dude to finish it and release it.
-
-
Not a sequel but Limbo of the Lost was in "development" for over 10 years. And by development, i mean stealling assets from other games.

What are you even comparing it to? Hell, even worst case scenario, Duke3d came out right around when Quake 1 did, and everyone was saying it looked dated, but that it was one of the best fps games ever made.
I see nothing in the trailer that looks dated at all. Most game tech these days is at a very obvious plateau in line with console hardware limits, and it doesn't really bother me. Having a limitless hardware ceiling is an arms race that has diminishing returns in cost of reaching a certain level of presentation vs actual experience.

it should just have the exterior apearence of chewing gum. You guys sign a deal with whoever, let's say Wrigley's, to put a pack a juicy fruit in the box, but all the sleeves of gum are empty! In this way, you can sell it for cheaper by inking an advertising deal with wrigley's and you get to make the "all out of gum" joke.
Everybody wins!

Then why did it take them 4 months to throw in the mosaic filtering?
Oh that's right, as predicted the hype on DNF died over the last month or so and is now re-kindled.

sure there was...
-Licensing the music
-Getting the ESRB to make up a little icon that any creative design student could whip up an unofficial "Not-Yet-Rated Symbol" in half a day
-Adding the mosaics
-Turning up the graphics of your transition titles from level 5 to level 10
-Waiting for the collective shack-hype to die down
For whatever reason the frame rate on YouTube blows regardless of quality setting --- release a Bink version!!-
which youtube video are you hitting? try www.youtube.com/2kgames version - that has no hitches.
also, you don't have a very good grasp of video game dev and marketing, which is understandable, but don't be a jerk about it - be happy you are getting FUCKING DNF
