Evening Reading
I know the masses of Xbox Live are all up in Call of Duty's business right now, but I hope a lot of people come back to Halo in a bit.
Anyone pick up Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood or Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit?

Yep. Starcraft itself isn't terribly hard; beating specific people in direct competition is hard.
Dwarf Fortress is just hard. It's not arbitrary or capricious in it's difficulty. It's not even so much that the game is trying to beat you. There are just a lot of things you have to do and prepare for, and if you don't, well, you lose.-
-
I think StarCraft is pretty complicated. I don't know. Dwarf Fortress seems to be way more in depth than StarCraft but it does give me the same "Oh man this is impossible without a plan" sort of feeling. I only play co-op vs computers in StarCraft, plus the SP campaign and I have a TERRIBLE time doing things at the right time and all that.

having Ratalon sit and walk me through it last night made it so very much easier for me to understand. I have been watching him play it for months and I just didn't get it. Now that he explained it and he gave me the wiki as a backup, I am doing pretty well. I am only a couple of hours into gameplay at this point though.

What is Dwarf Fortress?
Dwarf Fortress is an ASCII game which includes both a roguelike adventure mode, and the more popular Dwarf Fortress Mode, which focuses on the creation and survival of a small dwarven settlement. (from the wiki)
What is Succession play?
Every person takes a year long 'turn' ruling a fortress before passing to the next ruler (Via save game).
For this Succession, you'll need to use the Lazy Newb Pack to get the Ironhand tile set. One of the most famous (and funny) recorded ones was http://lparchive.org/LetsPlay/Boatmurdered/
What if I hate ASCII art?
There are several user created texture packs available.

My favorite is Mike Mayday's (http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/List_of_user_graphics_sets#Mike_Mayday.27s_combined_pack_.28DFG.29) but the link to download seems to be not working)
Didn't we do a Dwarf Fortress challenge before?

From the wiki:
1) Build the cage with b-j. You can't hook up levers to unbuilt cages so this step is necessary.
2) Build a lever. It can be built anywhere. I usually put it just outside the Death Chamber, so the puller doesn't have to be physically in the room, and still be close to the cages,
3) Connect the lever to each cage with a-j.
4) Move your troops to the room and lock them in.
5) Pull the lever.

do you want the trap again? A few ways I handle it:
1.) Dwarf Atom Smasher: Make a draw bridge that raises up and down. Raise draw bridge, put animal under drawbridge. Smash.
2.) Death Chamber: Make a room with a long hallway and fill it with traps. Place cage in room and attach lever and mechanisms to it. Pull lever which you placed OUTSIDE the room and watch as whatever is in the cage runs down the hallway and gets dismembered. -

I believe the dwarfs will collect the bones from a refuse pile, but I usually setup a bone pile eventually.
Similarly, I will also setup a fresh hide pile if I'm going to be doing a lot of butchering, in it's own room with doors do that if one does rot, the miasma doesn't spread far.
bone piles can be out in the open as they don't rot.

for people playing the succession game, why aren't dwarves taking wood from here?

just like the quality of items (-, +, *, etc) clothes get marked with x, X, XX as they wear out. I think at X and XX they start the generate negative thoughts, which can be seen this the z:status - view thoughts and preferences screen. Enough negative thoughts and you can get a dwarf throwing a fit. With the deaths that already occurred and the ones that I was sure to come under my rule, I want the get a jump on the problem. The clothes were only at x (first level) so it wan't an issue yet.
I actually didn't get to making any clothes. But I set up a loom, a clothes shop, and a dyer's shop together in one room with a cloth stockpile. I believe finished clothes are 'finished goods' and that dwarfs that need clothes will just take them when needed, at least before the economy starts up. Once economy kicks in, you need to set up a few shops, and one should be designates the clothes shop.
