What is described as the "first gameplay trailer" for Dragon Age 2 has arrived, though you already know the score--it's a montage of action-packed snippets and cutscenes from BioWare's fantasy RPG, focusing solely on the male choice in protagonist.

Dragon Age 2 is slated to arrive for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on March 8, 2011. Pre-order before January 11 and you'll receive the BioWare Signature Edition for no additional cost, which packs an estimated $20 worth of bonus downloadable content.

Is it just me or is there no gameplay in there?

Normally gameplay implies ingame footage of someone playing the game...

Some of those snippets of people attacking look like they're from someone playing the game. That's exciting, isn't it?

The term "gameplay trailer" has been unfortunately eroded. Even "gameplay footage" is becoming a bit more montage-y.

It's not gameplay, it's a montage of in game cut-scenes, some of which happen in the middle of "gameplay".

I've played Dragon Age 2 and a few of the attack snippets look like they might be cut from straight gameplay. Or they could be from cutscenes.

Either way, I'll agree it's a bastardisation of the term.

Did you get to play PC or console? I have a lot of concern about how the PC version will play, and I still haven't heard from someone who's played the PC version.

BioWare said the combat will be nearly identical on the PC. Which is what everyone wants. The only change that needs to be made is having actual balance in the game...instead of Mages rocking everything.

Identical to the original on PC? I've read them make those claims on the official forums, but they've yet to show any footage to back it up. In fact, the only actual gameplay footage ever seen makes those claims extremely hard to believe. There was a huge outcry over that leaked gameplay footage, and Bioware/EA went out of their way to make sure everyone that hosted it took it down, and any mention of it on their forums was instantly locked and buried. They then claimed it wasn't indicative of the actual gameplay, and promised a true gameplay trailer would come out. We've waited patiently and what we got was a montage trailer that doesn't show us a damned thing about how the game actually plays.

What I've heard is it will be identical across platforms, which means the PC version will look like the console versions and not that the console versions will look or operate like the PC version of DAO did, which equals me not buying the game.

I get it. The quotes were enough to qualify what was shown. It looked like how combat will be depicted, just thrown in with cutscenes.

This is a far cry from the Diablo 3 gameplay video, where there is actual gameplay.

Is there even any gameplay in this game itself? I watched my friend play it for a bit once and all it was was him walking around, clicking on things and pausing the game all the time? I've seen people wanking over this game an awful lot so I know I must be missing something.

Role Playing Games typically feature a whole lot of 'walking around' and 'clicking on things'. Sometimes there is even 'dialog' and 'inventory management.'

LOL, awesome reply. Too bad these so called "Role Playing Games" are slowly going extinct. If it were not for indie game companies they would have been already. Sad to see the state of gaming these days. Nowadays apparently all you need to call a game an RPG is some sort of rudimentary skill advancement system and a little dialog.

I understand what an RPG is. My observation is just that this game purports to be a lot more "actiony" than it actually is. You only need to consider the fact that there is no real gameplay in this gameplay trailer to see that. Watching the game itself in motion is very underwhelming... lifeless, disjointed animations; lots of entities just standing on the spot and doing nothing...

This discrepancy is particularly apparent to me personally as the first thing my friend showed me of the game was that mindblowing, animated launch trailer - frenetic combat, dazzling acrobatics, breathtaking set pieces. ACTION. And then when I came to see the game itself it was simply... well, him walking around and clicking on things. And pausing an awful lot. I was like, "Is this it?! Is this the game?!" But then basking in the light of twin suns surrounded by hundreds of giant breasts and double rainbows would probably be dull after a trailer that well made.

Exploration??!?!? ....My Arse...It was all just combat areas with some stuff to look at. DA was about as 'on rails' as you get.. a series of closed areas 'joined' together by corridors.
