Evening Reading
While I won't be staying up to watch the match live, I'll definitely be checking out the VODs tomorrow. Then, October's tournament should begin and I'll probably be watching that. It also looks like a lot more ex-StarCraft 1 pro-gamers will be involved in the second GSL tournament.

redstone and diamond are about 15 up from bottom with it rarely found higher than 25-30up, iron is most plentiful about 35 up, but is found from sea level down, rarely above sea level. Coal is found almost anywhere, but is slightly more common below sea level that above, getting rare over ~20 above (mostly because of how little land there is above that level)

Look for natural cave systems with openings on the surface. They are pretty common, and you can usually find iron and coal pretty easily that way. Caves down near the bottom of the world are good for gold, diamond (still very scarce in my experience), and redstone. You can mine by just sinking shafts and then drifting horizontally, but that's a lot more work.
Lava has source blocks, just like water. I sunk a deep shaft this evening and found a huge cave with multiple lava and water falls. The main lava fall was over 20 blocks tall. Absolutely spectacular, and the coolest thing I've seen in the game so far.
I used the minecraft wiki for crafting recipes when I started out. I don't see how it could be considered cheating.
After a solid week of playing, I have a main base along with a half dozen satellite outposts. Basically, whenever I want to try mining at a different location I build a base on that spot. Do whatever works for you.

Yep.
Get 5 buckets of lava
Dig a + sign into smooth stone, 1 deep
Fill + sign with the 5 buckets of lava
Dig down into the + sign (through the lava) one more level, resulting in a + sign that's 2 deep, full of lava
Take buckets out of the center tile, it should regenerate
If you want, hop on to MercFox's server and I'll show you how to do it sometime. -

Foo:
I was looking at the PA map and it looks like there are specific weather areas. Is this possible to do without restarting the map?
I never got to play on the snow world server and wonder if it would be possible to add one in. In a much smaller fashion though. Maybe just a continent or something.
Give it a read.

No it's SMP, they say it in the root post.
Admins and mods on the main build server do spawn blocks for people when needed, but only for things that can't otherwise by regularly attained such as ice blocks or lava. If they want any gold, diamond, rock, whatever, that is regularly available in the map, it's up to the player to get it. -

All in all a good evening! -
Panic fail. :(
I sunk a deep shaft this evening and found a huge cave with multiple lava and water falls. The main lava fall was over 20 blocks tall and fed a lava lake that covered the bottom of the cave. Absolutely spectacular, and the coolest thing I've seen in the game so far.
At any rate, I mined a ton of copper and coal from the cave, along with some redstone, gold, and a little bit of diamond. During my 2nd visit to the cave to finish up and get the harder to reach ore that I'd passed over on the 1st visit, I was trying to reach an outcropping of iron that was hanging upside down over the lava lake. Managed to work my way down to it and build a small island in the middle of the lava lake, and then began hacking at the ore. Got to the last block, and as it crumbled away, lava began flowing out. I panicked and jumped backwards to get out of the way and - you guessed it - fell off the island into the lava lake. ffffffuuuuuuuuuuuuuu... :(
This game is seriously getting to me, and the monsters are really creeping me out. You have to mine to get the ore, and caves are the best source of ore, but that's where the monsters are. TANSTAAFL. I'm actually scared whenever I'm down in a cave. Darkness. Zombie moans. Spider screeches. Skelly clanks. Heart beating fast and everything. I live in fear of those damned creepers. Absolutely silent ...until they ignite. Digging for ore in a cave, hear a hiss - "OH SHI..." BOOM!
I built a new base today, and for whatever reason, it is a monster magnet. It isn't uncommon for me to have to kill 5-6 spiders and 2-3 creepers when I go outside at daybreak, and I've gathered tons of arrows and feathers from burned up skellies and zombies. IDK what the cause is, but nigh time there is a maddening cacophony of spider screeches and zombie moans. On the plus side, I've gotten pretty proficient at offing spiders and creepers with a sword.
Damn, I'm loving this game.-
After an exploding guy blew the front off my house, I started putting torches every 10 squares or so outside my base in a fairly large radius. No enemies spawn nearby now and as a result I haven't had as many problems. (It does have the unfortunate side effect of making me cocky about being outside at night.)
