Evening Reading
I rented Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock with the sole intention of playing Rush's 2112 and returning the game. Too bad the song is locked behind the game's Quest Mode. I thought we were done with locked songs in music games.

Natural caves yield MUCH better mineral returns than blind mining, though a much higher chance of running into monsters. Do yourself a favor and carry a large number of logs (the highest density stack of wood) with you because wood is the one thing you can't find in abundance 2 miles underground and running out of torches SUUUUUUCKS.
Also, remember: you need a iron pick to mine gold, redstone and diamonds. If you break them with a wooden or stone pick, you'll just destroy the block with no drop.-

It's probably iron you found. If it's gold, it's a bright yellow color, if it's a dark coppery color, that's iron. Throw that ore in the furnace with some fuel (I use coal cause it's friggin everywhere) and it will make iron bars, then you make tools out of the iron bars the same way you make tools out of wood/stone.

Make a furnace (a ring of 8 cobble blocks).
Place furnace in world and right-click.
Put your ore in the top slot.
Put some coal in the bottom slot (you need 1 coal for every 8 ore).
Wait.
Wait.
OH GOD DAMMIT, HURRY UP!
Get iron bars (they will be a nice silvery color). If you get golden bars, keep looking.

Okay, I technically misspoke... it's not that minerals are necessarily more abundant in natural caves, it's that you can cover vastly more terrain in a give time frame, which dramatically increases your chances of finding the good stuff.
Case in point: I spent about 20 hours digging an enormous pit and some vast underground chambers and found about 10 iron, 6 gold, and 3 diamonds. The next day I spent about 2 hours exploring a gigantic cave system and found about 80 iron, 20+ gold, and 12 diamonds.
