Wired has a story of some random E3 things, including the news that ex-id programmer Michael Abrash is now on the X-Box team. Saw that on Stomped.

What did he do at id specifically?

he did a lot of the assembly optimization that made the Quake engine so fast. If it weren't for that work, Quake wouldn't have ran on probably half the machines that it did.

        To clarify.

The man was a HARDCORE MOTHERFUCKER

took the assembly right down to the clock cycle, and made the fastest rasterizer ever seen in a video game.

Check out his online articles that were posted a few weeks ago, the man is almost as much a genius as Carmack.

yeah, I read 'em. Not being interested in graphics programming all that much however, my assessment stopped at what your first sentence stated. :)
